UNITED PRESS — : — i NEWS BRIEFS ILGWU on Strike NEW YORK, N. Y., June 12.— Thousands of garment workers went on strike yesterday to" close large sections of the usually bustling garment district. It was the first major strike in 25 years against the citys biggest industry. Sixty-five thousand members of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union were on strike against 2,000 shops making womens and childrens coats and suits in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Cite Reason for Crashes WASHINGTON, D. C, June 12.— Air Force investigators reported today that engine trouble was the "primary" cause of the crash of eight F-84 jet fighter plane near Richmond, Ind., last Friday. The investigators said that so far they have found no indication of sabotage. Reds Have New Leaders NEW YORK, N. Y., June 12.— The Communist Party has a new top command ready to take over the minute the 11 convicted present leaders go to jail. Federal Bureau of Investigation officials say they are fully aware of the situation and know an alternate set of leaders was chosen several months ago. Okay Price Increases WASHINGTON, D. C, June 12.— The government authorized today price increases in hot dogs, bologna and other processed meat containing beef. The order permits these manufacturers to add increases in their costs for beef since January to their current prices. Those prices are now held under the general freeze at the highest levels prevailing between December 19 and January 25. See Loss of Deferments WASHINGTON, D. C, June 12.— Congressional experts said today that up to 385,000 draft registrants will lose their deferments under a new draft law which President Truman is expected to sign soon. They are men 19 through 25 deferred for support of wives alone or found unfit for service. The new draft law bars deferment for dependency of wives only, and forces the Army to cut its induction standards. De Gasperi Trailing ROME, Italy i June 12.— Premier Alcide De Gasperis Christian Democrats and allied parties were trailing the Communist bloc today in partial returns from last weekends local elections. But the government coalition succeeded in wresting control of three important provincial capitals from the Communist left-wing Socialist ticket. Red Resistance Light TOKYO, Japan, June 13.— United Nations forces drove northward against light to moderate Communist resistance along a front of nearly 70 miles in Korea Tuesday. From Chorwon, southwest anchor of the shattered "iron triangle," to the east coast the Allies continued their relentless advance north of the thirty-eighth parallel. Made Raid on Coast TOKYO, Japan, June 12.— British com- mandos made an audacious daylight landing on Koreas west coast 30 miles from the North Korean capital of Pyongyang last month, it was announced today. The Marine unit from the British cruiser Ceylon landed under the protective cover of off-shore United Nations guns and spent several hours in the heart of enemy territory. Baby Airlift Seen BERLIN, German, June 12.— Allied authorities may start a "baby" air lift to Berlin to smash a new Russian economic blockade, well-informed sources said today. Communist authorities started the blockade by restricting shipment of Berlin-made goods to western Germany. The United States, Great Britain and France charged in a note to the Russians yesterday that the restrictions violated the agreement by which the historic starvation blockade of Berlin was ended two years ago.
