STAR Z. was hustled forward to vie with LITTLE VIV for the pace, bore out on the latter while she was simultaneously drifting in through the stretch run despite the efforts of both riders and was gradually drawing away at the finish. LITTLE VIV began fastest, tenaciously stayed with STAR Z. after being headed on the turns and, while racing in contact with the latter in the drive, weakened at the end. An objection lodged by jockey Lindberg on LITTLE VIV against the winner was not allowed. WILL I, unable to stay with the leaders while bearing out on the turns, drifted out under punishment and had difficulty passing APACHE TRAIL, who was lugging in, but closed fast in the last yards. APACHE TRAIL could not be effectively ridden in the stretch while lugging in badly on WILL I, but finished well. EDDIEOW made up distance late. VINELAND tired. The others were outrun. SAUCY COLLEEN, exceedingly game and well ridden, met the early challenge from FIDDLER and retained a narrow advantage while racing next to the rail, opened a clear lead entering the stretch, then repulsed STAG in the final stages and was drawing away at the finish. STAG was sent up to challenge from the outside in the first quarter mile, swerved and had to be straightened at the head of the stretch, then loomed boldly, but hung. THE SPANIEL, unable to contend early, rallied willingly for the stretch run and finished fastest. FIDDLER was lightly steadied while vying for the lead, but faltered when put to pressure. SPANKER raced wide and weakened. TOP SPRING had no excuse for a poor effort. Overweight— Dollargofast, 1 pound. FOURTH RACE 3-4 MILE out of chute. Vaudeville, July 13, 1948— 1:09%— 3— 107. ALPHO gave an even effort. POMPOUS lacked early spede. PRICKLY was forced to race wide. GOOD LOOK gave a dull effort. RED POMPON was outrun. NEWTOWN lost ground on the outside and quit.
