Stop Stop Gap Gap Wins Wins Arlingtons Arlingtons Olympia; Olympia; Six Six in in Tremont Tremont as as Aqueduct Aqueduct Opens Opens Jet Master Looms Odds-On Favorite Expect Tahitian and Pintor To Give Son of Jet Pilot Most Contention in Stake By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 21.— The New York racing scene moves over to Aqueduct tomorrow for a 20-day session at the oldest of the Long Island tracks and the * closest to Manhattan. President Cyrus S. Jullien is presenting a pleasingly refurbished Aqueduct to New York patrons, having done everything the government will allow at this time to improve the physical aspects of the Queens County Jockey Club plant. Fast Racing Strip The entire stands have been freshly painted and track superintendent Lennie Litwak has achieved something approximating a miracle of horticulture in the infield. The grass is greener, the flowers gayer and more numerous and the fences on the steeplechase course higher than ever before. The racing strip is faster than at any time since 1894, with the exception of a few periods when the track was scraped for brief periods, but is pronounced safe, so far as the surface is concerned. The additional zippiness has been obtained by working a generous mixture of manure and rotted straw into the surface, which has been carefully screened. The turns, unfortunately, remain as sharp as ever, and will continue so until a relaxation of government restrictions permits the major chances at Aqueduct envisioned for the future. The sport during the next 20 racing days promises to continue on the high level that has prevailed at Belmont, with nine stakes on the agenda for the flat runners and five more for the jumping division. Stakes adorn the programs tomorrow and Saturday, with the 0,000 Tremont and the Continued on Page Thirty -Nine Six Seek Tremont As Aqueduct Opens Jet Pilot Looms as Odds-On Choice to Defeat Tahitian, Pin tor in 0,000 Stake Continued from Page One ,000 Aqueduct National Maiden Hurdle on the inaugural card and the 0,000 Queens County Handicap heading Saturdays bill. The highlights of the meeting are the Dwyer Stakes and the Brooklyn Handicap, each worth 0,000 in added money and at the popular distance of a mile and a quarter. They will be renewed on July 7 and July 14, respectively. Marlboro Stud Farms Jet Master looms an odds-on choice over the five juveniles he meets in the five and one-half furlongs of the Tremont, though he is asked to concede from four to 14 pounds to his rivals. Eddie Arcaro will ride the son of Jet Pilot — Mattie J. at 126 pounds and the colt has already showed a liking for the racing strip by turning in a fast trial here a few days ago. Jet Master won his four starts at Hialeah, climaxing the winter campaign with a victory in the Hialeah Juvenile won by Battlefield last year. He finished second in the Belmont Juvenile for his first start in the North, a race in which Battlefield also suffered his first defeat, then came back to clip a fifth of a second from Distractions 24-year-old track record by stepping five furlongs on the straight course in :55% in the National Stallion. Primate Not Entered Starmount Stables Primate, who beat Jet Master in the Juvenile then chased him from a respectful distance in the National Stallion, will not be back for another go at the current juvenile champion tomorrow. The five named to oppose George Odoms charge are George D. Wideners Tahitian, 122; Jack Amiels Count Flame, Vera S. Braggs Mixture and Montpeliers Pintor, 117 each, and Russell A. Firestones Sir ad, 112. Tahitian is a gelded son of Polynesian who won his last two starts at Belmont Park, but has never displayed anything like the speed manifested by Jet Master. Mixture finished behind him in his last start. Count Flame has trained brilliantly, but the son of Count Fleet — Morning bore out on the turns in his Jamaica races and was a bitter disappointment, without apparent excuse, in his last start on the straight course at Belmont Park. Pintor came up from Delaware for this race and may be second choice in the wagering, with Hedley Woodhouse in the saddle. The son of the French-bred Goya H. set a five-furlong track mark at Pim-lico, then finished seven lengths behind W. Goadby Loews The Pimpernel in the Christiana Stakes. The Pimpernel established a world mark for four and a half furlongs in his previous race at Belmont Park, but his connections appear to want to stay as far away from Jet Master as possible. National Maiden Hurdle The Aqueduct National Maiden Hurdle is having its first running at this track, the three earlier editions of the mile and three-quarter stake over the low hedges having been staged at Delaware Park. A field of six has been named for the race, headed by G. H. "Pete" Bostwicks Stunts with 155 pounds, most of which will be Jim Smiley. Stunts won his only race on hurdles with ease at Belmont Park and is able to start here because the "maiden" aspect of the race refrs to the horses status at the time of closing. Stunts will be coupled with Mrs. Bostwicks erratic Hyvania, 149, and opposed by the recent winner, Jam, Fulton, Kraft and Grandgent. The entry looms almost as short a price as Jet Master in the Tremont. A couple of track records may be in danger tomorrow. Jet Master appears capable of breaking records any time he starts and the present condition of the Aqueduct strip should make it possible for him to menace Apaches 1:04% mark as he attempts to continue to follow the pattern of Battlefield, who won last years Tremont. The six-furlong record of 1:10%, now jointly held by Doublrab, Beaugay and Energetic, may well be shaved in the fourth race. This is the Burg-El-Arab Handicap, named for the 1944 Tremont winner, and has a speedy field of six, including Hudson Valley Stables Mighty Quest, who holds the Belmont six-furlong record. Mighty Quest, however, will probably not be the favorite in the Burg-El-Arab, this honor probably going to Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Away, who will be ridden by Arcaro. The others in the dash are such speedsters as Iamarelic, First Glance, Big If and Liberty Rab. The latter beat Battlefield in last years Belmont Juvenile and won a division of the Hialeah Juvenile, but has never been able to regain that form.
