Saxony Furnishes Belmont Surprise Defeats Banjoist With Late Charge Be Modest Disqualified and Placed Last for Fouling in Water Blossom on Final Card i c BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 21. — Woolford Farms Saxony amazed the closing-day throng of 16,962 at Belmont Park today as he charged home four and a half lengths in the van at the end of the featured Shelter Island Purse. Greentree Stables Banjoist finished second, after taking the lead for a few strides in the upper stretch, while Vera S. Braggs Nosun was a half length farther back at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. King | Ranchs One the Mark, the favorite, was a head out of the money after trailing t most of the way. On the Mark carried sev- c en pounds more than the 113 announced I as his assignment yesterday and printed c in the program, but was given more than c a seven-pound beating. t Warren Mehrtens rode Saxony, who s paid 1.50 and was timed a sparkling c 1:42%, with his rider hustling him to the t finish. The son of War Jeep — Zaltowna, I by Town Guard, was purchased at the i Dickey Stable dispersal at Hialeah for 1 2,000, with Herbert M. Woolf and Harry Warner bidding in an informal partner- t ship, which was apparently dissolved at I once. Saxony had showed little in his four 3 previous starts for Woolford Farm , but showed promise in some races at Hialeah for his former owner. Thirteen Days of Rain The successful 34-day meeting came to a close in hot, sultry weather. Attendance showed a slight decline under 1951 average figures, due largely to 13 days of rain in the first 28 of the meeting, but wagering showed a substantial increase. Prospect went to the front soon after the start of the Shelter Island, closely followed by Banjoist and Nosun, while Saxony and On the Mark brought up the rear of the field of eight. The three leaders were heads apart rounding the wide curve to the stretch, daylight before Powwow, hile Saxony slowly closed ground on the outside and On the Mark continued to bring up the rear. Prospect and Nosun ran out of wind at the head of the home lane, leaving Banjoist in front for a few strides, but Saxony stormed up on the outside to take com-1 mand withlauthority and drew away stead-; ily, though bearing in slightly. Banjoist outfinished Nosun for the minor share of the awards, while On the Mark closed with a belated rush. Conn McCreary brought Woodvale Farms Be Modest up on the extreme outside to win the Water Blossom Purse by a length and a half from H. G. Schneiders little Martha, but the supporters of the Our Boots filly had several anxious minutes in store as the stewards called for the movies before the numbers were up. After viewing the films, Messrs. Dunne, Cassidy, Vosburgh and Phipps ruled that Be Modest had "crossed over and interfered with the field in the stretch." She was disqualified and placed last, with Little Martha being awarded the face. Second money went to George D. Wideners Blue Moon, who had finished a length away in third place, while Brookmeade Stables Torch, who had been a half-length out of the money, was moved up to third. Fourth money went to Maine Chance Farms Belle Amie. Little Martha, one of the longest-priced horses ridden by Eddie Arcaro all season, pair 5.30, while Be Modest was timed in l:12y5 for the six furlongs. The Water Blossom was a furious scramble from the start, with Eraser, Little Martha, and Torch racing as a team on the lead, while Be Modest was far back in the early stages, but closed fast on the outside as the leaders began to wilt in the fire of the fast early pace. Be Modest looped eight horses from just above the head of the home lane to just inside of the eighth pole and came in during the stretch run, but didnt appear appear to bother anyone but Belle Amie. The movies, however, were evidently more revealing. Of the early leaders, Little Martha and Torch held on well, while Eraser stopped badly. Blue Moon was in a contending position from soon after the start and finished well. i 1 ; . t ; . . t , ; i ■ - j
