ROYAL OATH stumbled to his nose at the break, recovered quickly and was with the pace in a few strides, took the lead in the stretch and won under pressure. PRESS vied for the lead from the beginning and turned in a good effort. SON FEN was always with the pace and held on stubbornly. EMERALD began sluggishly. MERRY REWARD had no excuse. KEEP WATCH, unhurried early, began to go wide just after entering the turn and was beyond the middle of the track when leaving the turn, then steadily made up ground through the drive to wear down the leaders. ROYAL FREEDOM, under light restraint until the final quarter mile, went between horses in the drive and closed resolutely. KIDDED trailed on the backstretch, moved through on the rail to challenge and turned in a good effort. MAYES RILEY shortened stride in the final stages. HOLLY RIDGE gave way in the final furlong after making the pace. FLYING MANE ran wide rounding the turn. MISTY SKY quit after pressing the pace early. PIGIWIGI was through early. Won easily; second and third driving. HALLEY, well in hand until the fifth fence, went up quickly to challenge, displaced MARYADOR and won easily. MARLIN, well placed throughout, closed with good courage. TOURISTETTE went by tired horses. MARYADOR established a comfortable lead quickly, tired and bobbled badly at the final fence. COLONEL V. quit. SPRINGDALE, rank before the beginning, refused to leave with the field, then was allowed to school over the course and fenced poorly. GIGGLE, prominent between horses, came out when clear and outgamed SANDY ALAN in the drive. The latter went through on the inside all the way to engage the winner and just missed. WAGRAM weakened before five furlongs, but caught horses more tired than himself in the drive. FULL MEASURE drew out under light urging on the turn, then tired in the drive. BE MODEST broke slowest, swung beyond the middle of the track leaving the turn, bore in while moving up with a rush in the drive, drew clear after reaching the lead in the late stages and was disqualified. LITTLE MARTHA was on nearly even terms for the lead from the outset and held on stubbornly until the end. BLUE MOON saved ground while improving position, threatened boldly in the stretch and faltered slightly. TORCH was eased back on the inside after entering the turn, then closed willingly. BELLE AMIE was in a trifle close in the stretch. ALGERIAN had to be cautiously handled when there was a general bunching of the field just inside the sixteenth post. ERASER vied for the lead until the stretch and tired. DUCHESS D. had good speed early and gave way, as did GUIDING. SAXONY, rated on the backstretch, made up ground rapidly on the outside when called upon and won fully extended from brisk hand urging. BANJOIST was a sharp factor while between horses most of the way, but was no match in the drive. NOSUN was always prominent and had no excuse. ON THE MARK trailed, then made a mild bid in the drive POWWOW tired. PROSPECT made the pace for six furlongs and gave way. COVETED failed to respond. GRAND DEMAND raced within striking distance on the outside, took command when ready and drew away. A claim of foul against the winner by the rider of ORB was not allowed. The latter, with the first flight while on the outside, gained a clear advantage between calls in the stretch, but was not good enough. APSLEY, reserved until midway of the turn finished best of the others. WITH SWORDS, restrained the opening stages, failed to respond BALLACHULISH tired the final quarter mile, as did DANS CHANCE. NOVEL REQUEST was outrun. KING WILSON dueled for the lead until leaving the turn and gave way.
