Mel Hash Starter Today In Maplewood at Suffolk Has Sickle Sue, Jeans Jay and Lionheart Among His Opponents v SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 21.— T. C. Melroses Mel Hash returns* to New England tomorrow where he is listed to compete in the Maplewood Purse-which features Suffolk Downs eight-race card. A stakes winner a couple of years • back, the six-year-old son of Hash — Cordi-cay confines most of his appearances in, the claiming ranks, but will get a chance under the allowance conditions of tomor-. rows feature. The Maplewood is at six furlongs and in addition to Mel Hash has attracted Mrs. Sam Orrs Sickle Sue, J.Nobles Lionheart, J. R. Dwyers Coming On, William Offermanns Shotral, O. L. Fosters Jeans Jay, Mrs. L. Palladinos Daring Mate and Starr Ranchs Jaialai. After an unsuccessful attempt to earn brackets at New York tracks, the former classy Mel Hash accompanied a shipment of the Melrose string to Narragansett Park and trainer J. P. Watts selected tomorrows spot as the medium for getting his charge started on the New England campaign. Third to Navy Flash and For Jon appears ample endorsement for Mel Hash against the Maplewood field. Unsound underpinning has been the reason for relegating Mel Hash to his present company. Sickle Sue, Jeans Jay and Lionheart appear the better suited of the opponents of Mel Hash to offer serious contention. Each of that trio has won over the local oval during the current campaign and needs only to duplicate those efforts to be right there tomorrow. Much interest on tomorrows card will be focused on the third race, a maiden two-year-old dash at five furlongs. In that race, Ralph Lowes Lucky-Brew, a son of Grand Slam — Tea Leaves will make another attempt to escape the non-winners ranks. The gelding was purchased at a fairly high price last fall and was well regarded during the winter months at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. Severe sickness nearly cost the life of the youngster but close attention and patience brought him back for racing. Debuting her earlier in the meeting, Lucky-Brew finished second and once again was stricken with sickness.
