Mahoon Makes Good in Salisbury Purse In Role of Staunch Choice at Delaware Timed Fastest Six Furlongs 1 Of Meeting, 1:10%, While Beating Adopt Two Lengths By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 21. — Proving punctual as a .90 favorite, the second victorious odds-on choice of the afternoon, Mrs. Theodore A. Randolphs Mahoon accounted for the featured Salisbury Purse in 1:10%, fastest race of the meeting and only one-fifth of a second slower than Winter Wheats track record. Winlochan Stables Adopt was a charging second, his late bid falling short by two lengths. In third position was High Ground Stables On, with John Duffs English-bred Finest Hour n. and Grant Thorns Scheming World completing the field. Clear skies and a fast track prevailed for the afternoons sport and another good turnout of approximately 10,000 witnessed the program. Despite the size of the field which contested the feature, the event was an interesting one, with Mahoons score enabling form followers to cash their third wager of the day. Scheming World, who has speed to burn but folds like an accordian when the stretch is reached, reeled off the opening quarter in :22% while holding the lead, ► — — • but gave way to Mahoon before the first half-mile had been completed. Once in the van, Mahoon drew clear rapidly and needed only mild urging through the final furlong to hold a clear advantage over Adopt, who closed impressively from last position at the head of the lane. On, in finishing third, lacked her usual speed and stamina, but in her favor it must be said that she was making her first appearance under silks in more than a month. Finest Hour n., a winner in England and making his American debut, showed a bit of promise while racing forwardly for a half mile. He weakened thereafter, however, and was beaten more than seven lengths, while Scheming World was five lengths farther back. Earning his first purse since being haltered for ,500 by David G. Neuman, Curtain Time, a six-year-old Widener-bred son of Eight Thirty and Swabia, turned in a driving victory over R. Roy McClarins Abbottstown in the fifth event. The two were separated by a half length, with the winner being timed in 1:11% as a .50 favorite. Three lengths farther back came Hampton Stables Best Punch. Frank Bone turned in a well-judged ride atop the winner. In a driving finish the seven-year-old Challenger H. gelding scored by a nose over Rokeby Stables Crooning Wind. The two outdistanced Isidore Biebers Repose, who raced coupled with Crooning Wind. Band Leader received a flawless ride from Frank D. Adams and paid .90.
