C, June 21.— The meeting which was scheduled to open here yesterday at Landsdowne Park is off, temporarily, at least. Squeezed between demands of the horsemen for a higher purse minimum and the excessive provincial tax, the management decided to keep the gates closed. At a meeting last Monday between British Columbia Turf and Country Club officials and Chief Justice Wendell B. Marris of the Supreme Court, recently appointed by the Attorney General of British Columbia to arbitrate the difficulties between horsemen and management, the entire blame for conditions was placed on the government. The Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association was not represented at i the meeting as they had decided at a session held on the previous Sunday night not to enter into arbitration regarding purses, but to hold out for their original i demand for 50 minimums. However John Davidson, a local owner, ! presented the case of the horsemen to the Chief Justice, and A. L. McLennan, president . of the British Columbia Turf and j Country Club, spoke for the latter company. . At the conclusion of the meeting Chief I Justice Farris issued a statement that the , government was way out of line in milking r racing dry and not leaving enough for r tracks to operate at a decent profit and at j. the same time provide adequate purses for c horsemen. This statement has been forwarded to the provincial government and both horsemen and management are awaiting any j reaction that may be forthcoming. Entry wickets at Lansdowne were ; opened Tuesday at the regular time but not sufficient horsemen saw fit to enter . . for the 50 purses as offered, so when the closing time arrived it was found necessary to announce suspension of racing. , The only solution seems to be in the hands of the British Columbia provincial government, and this is awaited both by horsemen and management. In the meantime Lansdowne remains closed.
