Suffolks Two Big Stakes Draw Stars Spartan Valor and Blue Man Top Massachusetts, Yankee Handicaps, Respectively SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 4. — Americas No. 1 handicap star — William Helis, Jr.s Spartan Valor— and one of the nations top three-year olds, White Oak Stables Blue Man, head an impressive array of thoroughbred greats who have been nominated for Suffolk Downs two major stakes, the 5,000 added Massachusetts Handicap on June 11 and the 0,000 added Yankee Handicap for sophomores exclusively on June 17. In all, a total of 37 were nominated for the Massachusetts and 28 for the Yankee. The famed Massachusetts Handicap which has been run uninterruptedly since the opening of the Downs in 1935, has attracted nominations from the most famous stables in racing including George D. Widener, Brookmeade Stable, C. V.~Whit-ney, Greentree Stable, King Ranch and William Helis, Jr. The best known of the handicap stars who have been nominated are Spartan Valor, Battlefield, Alerted, Greek Ship, Mameluke, One Hitter, Crafty Admiral, Count Turf, Arise, County Delight, Pilaster and Sonic. Sophomore Event Carries 0,000 Purse From this impressive list of nominees, there is every indication that the eighteenth running .of the Massachusetts Handicap over a mile and a quarter, will take rank with the great races of the past. The 0,000 added Yankee for three-year-olds, only, which is also a mile and quarter, has the best sophomores in training today nominated for the richest race in New England.
