Six Face Whirla Lea in Dick Welles Second Last Out In Kentucky Oaks Bowed to Real Delight in That Race; Jo Pilot, Bloom And Jet Ace Her Rivals Today HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., June 4. — Whirla Lea, a chestnut daughter of Whirl-away, who was bred at Calumet Farm, will be making her first appearance since she finished second to Real Delight in the Kentucky Oaks when she goes postward in the featured Dick Welles Purse here to-morrom. The filly, who won three races last season, began her three-year-old career with a victory at Hialeah when she beat Hushaby Baby and five others. Five days later she finished second to Anchors Aweigh in the Jasmine Stakes. Although unplaced in the Everglades Stakes and the Florida Derby, she came back to win at Gulfstream Park. Whirla Lea, who is owned by C. W. Winters, will meet three of her own sex and a trio of colts in the Dick Welles, which will be at six furlongs. The other fillies are Pierce Holtons Jo Pilot, Walmac Farms Gala Fete, and Mrs.* L. J. Herrmanns Bloom. The colts are Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Daniels Jet Ace, B. W. Landys Nobility, and Emerald Hill Stables Blue Square. The latter will carry top weight of 114 pounds. Bloom, who was also bred at Calumet, is by Sun Again out of Larkf lower, by Blue Larkspur and was a clever winner here Memorial Day when she trimmed a fair field of claiming sprinters at six furlongs. Arizona K. was favored in the event, but was unplaced. As a two-year-old last season Bloom was successful once in five starts. Won Four Out of Six as Juvenile Jo Pilot as a two-year-old had a better record than Bloom. She won four of her six starts. This will be her first outing of the season. She is a daughter of the Kentucky Derby winner, Jet Pilot, out of the Flying Heels mare Jo Agnes. Jet Pilot will have another representative in the feature, that being Jet Ace, who is out of the Blue Larkspur mare, Alyearn. Jet Ace was a winner last year, and after being second in his first three starts this season, he was fifth to Gushing Oil in the Arkansas Derby. He tried the Sam E. Wilson, Jr. colt again in the Blue Grass Stakes, but was last in a four-horse field that also included Cold Command and Smoke Screen. Nobility was purchased recently from Wilson by Bernard W. Landy, whose stable is having considerable success at this meeting. The son of Supremus — Delicat finished third to Boomer and Dance Nsing in his latest start here on May 21. He had won previously at New Orleans. Last year at two he won three races. Blue Square has been out 15 times this yqar, winning at Hialeah on February 9 and again at Gulfstream on March 7. He was fourth behind Eljay, McGrathiana, j and Plunger in his only start here. I Fifteen three-year-old maidens were entered in tomorrows supporting feature, the [Wise Counseller Purse. They include two [ couplings, one of which consists of Frank V. Brachs Mybless and Lexbrook Stables Stepping Up; the other being Howard Wells Mama Eder and Sunningdale Farms Iroquois Maid.
