Linksmen Play Today By HENRY THORNGERRY United Press Sports Writer HOYLAKE, England, May 25.— Long-hitting Jimmy McHale of Philadelphia led eight Americans into the third round of the British Amateur Golf Championship today, but 12 others were beaten during a miserable day on which all play was halted for more than an hour by a raging thunderstorm. Wild off the tees, but steady on his recoveries, McHale walloped Peter B. Hegin-botham of New Zealand, 8 and 6, easily retaining his place as title favorite in the sentiments of the galleries. Jack Munger of Dallas and Big Bill Campbell of Huntington, W. Va., the only other highly-regarded American entrants in action on opening day, scored easy 6 and 5 victories for third-round berths along with Air Force Sgt. Dale Buettner of Toledo, Ohio, Ernest Arend, Jr., of Deal, N. J., Bob Abrahams of Adison, 111., Air Force Maj. W. D. Hendeson of New York, and Lt. Howard Culbreth, an army officer stationed in French Morocco. Henderson bowled over a fellow-American, Larry Dana of Greenburg, Pa., 1 up. Britons accounted for the other American casualties — Army Maj. Oliver K. Rogers, Selina, Kan.; Ray Graham, West bury, N. Y.; W. C. Wehnes, Cleveland; Lt. Col. G. M. Adkins, Brady, Tex.; George T. Baird, New York; Robert Goldwater, Phoenix; Air Force Capt. James T. Brady, Sacramento; Robert Schuman, Atlanta; maj. J. Anderson, Louisville; Pfc. Edwin Kaczor, Lackawanna, N. Y., and Orrin Davison of San Mateo, Calif. All but Britons Draw Byes Every player in the field except two Britons drew first round byes. Todays contests involved 20 Americans in second-round matches in the upper half of the draw. The remaining 23 Yank entrants, including defending champion Harvie Ward and Frank Stranahan, play tomorrow in the lower half. Abrahams, former CDGA Junior Closed champion and ex-member of the Northwestern U., golf team, scored an easy 6 and 5 »victory over R. J. O. Meyer of England.
