Wings o Morn Gains Close Decision Whips Sally Catbird! ► By Nose in Thriller Black-Eyed Susan Is Next Start for Cain Hoy Miss; Woodlands in Popular Win By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMUCO, Baltimore, Md., May 25. — Cain Hoy Stables Wing oMorn and Louis Lee Haggin II. s Sally Catbird staged a thrilling stretch duel this afternoon in the featured Bed o Roses Purse, with the former emerging victorious by a nose. Eight lengths behind the top pair came Wally Schwabs Milspal, who was seven lengths clear of Mrs. Mabel R. Burkes Pashpie. the only other contestant. Th Bed o Roses was. of course, named for Alfred G. Vanderbilts great race mare of several seasons back. The daughter of Rosemont died before she was able to prove, herself as a broodmare. While none of todays starters possesses the class of the Vanderbilt miss, Wings oMorns time of 1:46% for a mile and a sixteenth over a fast, but dead, track, was satisfactory. Hank Moreno, a late arrival in the jockeys quarters, was allowed to ride the filly, who was backed into ,000 favoritism by a crowd of 10,836. Sally Catbird, who had failed to impress greatly while winning a pair of sprint offerings earlier in the meeting, gained supporters this afternoon by her tenacity during the late stages. It is doubtful, however, that her number would have remained in the top slot had she finished in first position. Drifts Out in Stretch After setting the# pace under Ronnie Nashs urging, Sally Catbird met the chal-leng of Wings OMorn with varied tactics. She drifted out when straightened for the stretch run and several times brushed Wings oMorn. The latter, under Morenos rather confident urging, drove to the fore at the wire to gain the nod. Moreno felt that Wings oMorn had gained the verdict, but he waited near the unsaddling enclosure, evidently prepared to claim a foul should the photo decide against the Cain Hoy miss. That was not necessary, however, and the rider and trainer Eddie Hayward left the course discussing possible strategy for Saturdas 0,000 added Black-Eyed Susan, in which the Alsab three-year-old will next compete. Sally Catbird, too, will fulfill her engage-merit in the week-end mile and a sixteenth, but it seems unlikely that Milspal or Pashpie earned a starting position through their efforts in the Bed o Roses. William G. Helis, Jr.s Woodlands, a two-year-old Relic colt, who had raced well in a pair of Garden State engagements and was shipped here with todays fifth race in view, scored an easy victory as the .40 favorite. With Charley Burr in the saddle, Woodlands was in front throughout while bein gtimed in 1:00% for the five furlongs and held an advantage of three and one-half lengths at the finish. Five horses hit the wire heads apart behind the winner, with Mrs. Henry A. Parr IH.s Staffordshire and Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs World Series, a pair of first-time starters, earning second and third money, respectively.
