MURPHY Thaxter Ready for Royal Bay Gem Won Pea body Prep in Clever Style Everett Jr. Seeks National Stallion HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 25.— The best race on last Saturdays program here received but little publicity. It was i the the Peabody Peabody Prep, Prep, a a i - - ; . » j • t t the the Peabody Peabody Prep, Prep, 0,000 affair in which some of the top candidates for this weekends Peabody Memorial Handicap were engaged. The Peabody Prep was given secondary notice to the two divisions of the Joliet Stakes for two-year-olds, and as it was run as the eighth event, event, the the "lead "lead stories" stories" ; 1 • ; : ! . ] ] J ] ] i j t j ] t ] , j ] t t s event, event, the the "lead "lead stories" stories" in order to make newspaper editions were all on the Joliet. It could have been a good headliner on Friday or Monday, but Saturday it was just another race. But it was a good one. Thaxter, owned by Mrs. O. S. Deming, a colt who has been showing improved form as a three-year-old, was the winner over Platan, recently acquired by Hasty House Farm, while Dixianas Spy Defense was third. And while on the subject of the Peabody Memorial, the favorite for that 0,000 added affair is due to arrive here Tuesday. That is Royal Bay Gem, who will come from Pimlico where he finished third in the Preakness. He will be in charge of trainer Clyde Troutt and will be accompanied by two others. Royal Bay Gem will meet no Native Dancers in the Peabody, although a good field will oppose hi mat the mile and an eighth distance. Saturdays big pari-mutuel handle of ,530,947 was topped only once last year. That was on Memorial Day. This Memorial Day, which is also a Saturday, is expected to bring over ,000,000 through the machines . . Dicks Future and Mr. Prosecutor, favorites in the first and second divisions of the Joliet, had excuses. . . Thunderbird, responsible for the long delay before the horses entered the gate for the first division of the Joliet, could stand some taming down. Acted like a wild horse just off the range. The colt bit assistant starter John Slamin so badly on the hand that the man will be unable to work for several days. Everett Lowrance, owner of Everett Jr., departed for his home in New Orleans after viewing his colt in victory. Everett Jr. will be shipped to Belmont Park to run in the National Stallion Stakes at that track June 10. . Fred Browning, owner of Company B., winner of the first end of the Joliet, is visiting from his home in Arlington, Texas . . . Jockey Al Popara has been engaged to • ride Ace Destroyer in the Peabody Me- morial, while Johnny Adams, who flew from Santa Anita to Florida on several occasions last winter to ride Ace Destroyer, will be on one of the Hasty House colts, probably Platan. Understand that a couple of representatives of Australian race tracks were present at Fairmount Park opening night and were impressed with racing under the lights. Could be that sprinting under the stars will be introduced in Aussie- land ere long. . Although the names of Keene Daingerfield and Ralph W. Chois- ser appear on the Lincoln Fields program, those gentlemen are not here. Daingerfield is in Ohio, and Choisser at Fairmount Park. Incidentally, the Fair- mount chore as steward will be Choissers first leading official role on the turf. He was assistant steward representing the Illinois Racing Board at Sportsmans Park. Choisser is a brother of the trainer for ex-Governor John S telle, of Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Hooper came up from Miami Saturday to cheer for their colts in the Joliet Stakes . Master Ser- geant Gerald Miller, son of Harry Miller, assistant maintenance manager here, is visiting. Has been in Korea for well over a year and is at present on a 90-day furlough. Nick Burger got in from Louisville with four horses for E. R. Morris and I two for Charles F. Henry . . . c. F. Wagner shipped all his horses, with the exception of Snapheel, to Detroit. Snapheel, claimed , at this meeting, was placed in charge of D. Cataldo. Due to the Illinois claiming rule, Snapheel would not have been eligible to race at Detroit until the Lincoln Fields meeting has been concluded . . . The Red ] Continued on Page Thirty-Six 1 Lincoln Fields Notebook By J. J. MURPHY Continued from Page Four and Green Stable sold the three-year-old filly Ambrose Ace to W. A. Visans. P. Calo and L. J. Trilla bought High Flavor from Charles Fritz and turned him over to A. E. Mettz to train . . . Trainer Harold White brought 12 head from Louisville to race in the interests of Shady Brook Farm ... J. J. Phillips has sent the five -year -old mare Gala Night to Phil Chinns place at Lexington to be mated with Buy and Sell . William Hal Bishop is known as the luckiest man on the draw in claiming ranks. He outshook four fellow owners for Jimmys Doll last Saturday. A large number of two-year-olds here are by Depth Charge, who is a half brother of Count Fleet . . . Hasty House Farm seem to have a smart filly in Queen Hopeful, a daughter of Roman. The miss recently won her third straight. She cost ,800 at the Keeneland yearling sales last season . . Mrs. Nellye Viscusi, who owns the two-year-old colt Dicks Future, is the wife of Louis Viscusi, who, we are told, is manager of Willie Pep, the former featherweight boxing champion. The colt is named for their son and its earnings will be put in a fund for the lads future. . .Learn from the West Coast that James N. Crofton will put his stakes-winning mare, Special Touch, back in training after having bred her to Windy City II. ... A national magazine has photographers on hand "shooting a layout" on papa John and his son John Ralph Adams.
