• J I | « New Mutuel Handle Set At Beulah Park Course Saturdays Crowd of 1 1 ,500 Wagers 14,248 on Nine Races By R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 25. — The record-smashing enthusiasm of the 11,500 fans who wagered a new mutuel high of 14,248 on the nine-race Satut-! day program, including a new high indi-j vidual race pool of 5,780 bet on the fourteenth renewal of the Governors Handicap, overshadowed all other topics at the Beulah Park track this morning. The smashing half-length victory of J. and S. Hanovers Galway Boy over Sun View Stables Ground Fog exhilirated the large crowd and provided trainer L. L. Sackett and his son, Billy, who rode the winner, with a gratifying sense of achievement as they accepted the Governors trophy presented by his personal representative, Lieut. Governor James W. Brown. Previous high for this central Ohio track was established on the closing day of the 1952 fall meeting when the Ohio Championship day crowd pushed 93,960 through the windows to shatter long standing mutuel marks at the Grove City track. Saturdays record mutuel handle pushed the average percentage for this spring meeting approximately 16 per cent over last season despite a spell of rainy weather which has kept the track in an "off" condition. This increment justifies the decision of president Robert J. Dienst to program afternoon racing at Beulah, while abandoning the twilight programs of former spring meetings. A six-furlong allowance sprint tops tomorrows bill with nine sprinters meeting in the dash. K. and O. Stables Porman and Ed C. Buntings Teddy Chick will be seeking to extend their Beulah victory string to three straight against Jungle Fire, .Choice Bits, Pushmytow and Red Frances, Golden Reaper, Frosty Acres and Plain Betty. Teddy Chick will be making her first start in the gold and blue Bunting colors, having been claimed from her winning race, but is taken to return part of her purchase price at first asking.
