Baked Indian in Front From Start to Finish Thornburg Has His Mount Three Lengths in Clear at Cranwood By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent CRANWOOD PARK, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, June 22. — F. J. Baldis Baked Indian, outbroke his field and made every pole a winning one in taking todays featured Bedford Purse here /at Cranwood. The winner was nicely ridden by Buck Thornburg and returned his many backers .20 as the four winning favorite of the day. Time for the half-mile dash-was :48, over a lightning fast track. Gold Locket I was second, three lengths back and a length and one-half in front of Sydney H. It was a fine afternoon for the sport and a crowd of 4,264 turned out for the nine races as this plant started its third week of operation. Baked Indian looked the part of a quarter horse when the start was effected, for he was easily a length in front of the others just a jump after the break. Midway down the backstretch, Baked Indian had increased his lead to three lengths and, while saving ground on the turns, maintained that comfortable lead. Gold Locket was second and Sydney H. was in third position after the first quarter. Through the stretch with Thornburg steadying the colt he remained in front by three and the only real action was a ding-dong battle going on for fourth place between Gee and Cattaragus. Gee finally wound up with the fourth money, finishing well, while near the rail. Trainer Price had the good looking son of Scotts Indian — Sun Baked all dressed up for his winning effort. Baked Indian had colorful bows wrapped in his mane and his tail sported a big hairbow. It was his first winning effort of the year in seven starts. Last season the colt won twice, his last score having been chalked up at Water-ford Park in July. Mrs. Ronald E. Houses Bellitas, ridden nicely by Rollin Reynolds, overcame trouble on the far turn, to draw out nicely in the late stretch and register at the wire with a length and one-half verdict over Fair Degree. Chaldson, one of the rank outsiders, was third another length in arrears. Bellitas paid her backers 0.20 and was timed in 1:44% for the mile which is only a fifth of a second over the track record.
