Shoemaker Boosts Years Total to 203 Winners Rides Six Winners at Hollywood For Third Such Feat in Career . HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 22. — Willie Shoemaker is a little nearer the years jockey championship and Anthony DeSpiritos record of 390 winners in a single season, as a result of the field day he enjoyed at Hollywood Park last Saturday. The little Texan, whose economy i of words have prompted newsmen to call him "Silent Shoe," rode six of his eight mounts to victory to raise his years total to 203 winners, and if he continues his present clip, he is almost certain to pass the mark which DeSpirito hung up last year. "DeSpirito is his closest rival this year in the Texans quest for the championship, with 135 winners while in third place is Harold Keene with 128. DeSpirito currently is serving a suspension." Shoemaker began his days activity by winning the first three races with, in order, Good Ruling, Shedont Smoke and These Times. He missed the fourth and then came back to take the next two with Fabricate and Stranglehold. He had a loser in the seventh, Trusting, but he completed his days work by riding the winner of the last race, Emery. Twice before in his career Shoemaker has ridden six winners in a single afternoon. He accomplished the feat in 1950 at Bay Meadows and again last spring at Tanforan. N No other rider has ridden as many as six winners on a southern California track in one day. Johnny Longden, however, rode five winners in one day twice at Hollywood Park in 1948, Bill Pearson handled as many winners here in 1941, and Silvio Coucci rode rive here in 1938. Longden rode six winners one day at Bay Meadows in 1947 and Basil James and Johnny Adams rode the same number in 1939 at Tanforan and Bay Meadows. At this meeting alone Shoemaker has handled 50 winners, which is 23 more than his nearest rival, Longden. Four of the winners Shoemaker handled last week-end were for trainer R. H. Mc-Daniel, who is now Hollywood Parks leading conditioner in point of winners. Mc-Daniel now has 13 winners for the meeting, one more than Willie Molter.
