High Gun Definitely Going to England For Major Summer Stakes Engagement i Reveal Objective Might Be Race Other Than King and Queens Feature at Ascot BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 1. — Owner Robert J. Kleberg, Jr., and trainer Max Hirsch said today that it had definitely been decided to send King Ranchs High Gun to England for one race, but it has not yet been decided just when he will go. There is also a possibility that his objective will be some other race than the King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on July 16. Klebergs decision to ship High Gun abroad was reported exclusively by Chuck Connors in Mondays issue of the Daily Racing Form and Morning Telegraph. After studying the diagram of Ascot which is published in the American Racing Manual, Kleberg said that the sharp turn into the stretch was, "horrifying," and added that, if possible," he would prefer to run on_a track with left hand turns similar to our own. Asked if the right hand turns and sharp sti etch bend at Ascot! would prevent High .Gtm from appearing in the rich mile and a ► : half, Kleberg said they would not, but added: "Our idea in sending High Gun to Europe is to meet the best of their horses in a race at a suitable distance, but we dont want to take any more the worst of it than necessary. If we could find another race that would attract the same class of horses and be run on a track with left hand turns, it would be preferable. "In any case, we only want to go over for one race and come back for. the Jockey Club Gold Cup here, rather than stay over long enough for High Gun to be affected by the change of climate." High Gun, a mid-season development last year, was voted best three-year-old of 1954 in" the- annual poll conducted by the Morning Telegraph and Daily Racing Form. He" was accorded the honor on the strength of his victories in the Peter Pan Handicap, Belmont Stakes, Dwyer Stakes, Sysonby Mile, Manhattan Handicap and Jockey Club Gold Cup. He has earned 62,525 to date. In all, he started 14 times last .season, and placed three times and finished third four times. After coming into his own with victories in New York in the Peter Pan and Belmont, he made an unsuccessful sojourn to Chicago, where he was third and then second to Errard King in both the Arlington Classic and the American Derby at i Washington Park. He concluded his campaign with four successive triumphs at j Belmont Park. As a two-year-old in 1953, High Gun J was lightly raced, starting only three times, jbut winning twice and earning ,475. Moved into stakes company as a sopho-1 more, he did not score until the Peter Pan j Handicap, his seventh start of the year, although he had earned two seconds and two thirds up to then. A proven stayer, and expected to. be one of the mainstays of the handicap division as a four-year-old, his seasonal debut this i year was eagerly awaited. He made his first 1 1955 appearance under 130 pounds in the j Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont on May 14, and did the expected, romping off by more than four lengths at the end of a mile jin 1:35%. Handicapper Frank E. "Jimmy" •Kilroe showed his esteem for the colt by assigning him 133 pounds for Mondays Suburban Handicap. No four-year-old had ever won this Belmont fixture under so high an impost, and High Gun just failed by a head to be the first to accomplish the feat, bowing to Helioscope, who carried 128 pounds.
