Reflections — By Nelson Dunstan Peter Pan Should Attract Fine Field Bay of Bengali II. Impressive on Grass Top Fillies and Mares in Top Flight NEW YORK, N. Y., June 1.— After the running of the Preakness the weights for the Peter Pan Handicap this week end make an interesting study. When Nashua crossed the Preakness finish, he was a length, in front of Saratoga., who was seven lengths ahead of Traffic Judge, with Nances Lad beaten but neck for third place. All carried 126 pounds. Nashua was not named for Saturdays race at one and one-eighth miles, but Saratoga is at the top of the list with 128 pounds. Traffic Judge is next at 123 and Nances Lad gets in with 120. That way weighted another meeting of this trio would be interesting, but there are many others who deserve consideration. It is difficult to visualize the field Delaware Park will offer for theN Kent, a three-year-old stake at one and one-sixteenth miles, the same day. In recent years the Peter Pan has been won by such as Ponder, Counterpoint and, last season, by High Gun, who defeated Fisherman and Diving Board. In the Belmont Stakes, High Gun defeated Fisherman once again. High Voltage ranks high on the Peter Pan list with 121 pounds and this winner of the Acorn, Black-Eyed Susan and Coaching Club American Oaks would be a magnet if she came out to oppose the colts. Summer Solstice Well Regarded in England Summer Solstice, the Irish gelding who was imported by Hasty House Farm, is another Peter Pan eligible and if he goes postward he will carry 122 pounds. This colt was highly regarded in England and Ireland last season, when, as a two-year-old, he won the Caterbran Stakes at Epsom, the Granville Stakes at Ascot, and the Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket. He will bear watching in his American campaign. One of the most impressive Irish-breds we have seen in a debut in recent years is Bay of Bengal II., who won the race preceding the Preakness last Saturday. Ridden by Joe Culmone, he. led from end to end and at the finish was seven lengths in front of Windsor King, ridden by Eddie Arcaro. A three-year-old, he is by Maharaj — Kumar, out of a Blue Peter mare, Bon Voyage. He had a good record as a two-year-old in Ireland and England. In the Dee Plate, he was beaten only a neck by Pana Slipper, the Irish colt, who ran second to the French-bred Phil Drake, but in front of the favorite, Acropolis, in the Epsom Derby. Taking a line through that race and his showing at Pimlico, Bay of Bengal II. may be a horse to contend with in the richer and more important grass races to be run in the coming months. Nov/ American-owned, he cannot start in the Washington, D. C, International; .but there are many other opportunities for a horse of his speed and class. The Top Flight Handicap at Belmont next Wednesday could attract one of the best fields of fillies and mares seen on Long Island in many a year. With 5,-000 added and at one mile and a sixteenth, the 55 nominated include High Voltage, Parlo, Miz Clementine, Hen Party, Incidentally, Cerise Reine, Gainsboro Girl, Evening Out, Ming Yellow, Canadiana, Grecian Queen, Riverina, Myrtles Jet and others. That is just about the cream of the crop of eastern fillies and mares, about the only one. missing being Mrs. Charles Silvers Lavender Hill. This is practically the same group that will be seen in the "Distaff Big Three" at Delaware Park this year, which series includes the 10,000 Delaware Handicap. These are years when the fillies and mares have far greater opportunities than they had two decades ago and this is also a year when we have many impressive members of the so-called weaker sex. Weights for the Top Flight will be announced by Jimmy Kilroe Friday. There are many candidates for all these races who will be highly prized as broodmares when their racing careers come to an end. Contract orf Rider to Be Auctioned Off Three-Dot Shorts: Saturday night the Fasig-Tipton Company will auction the racing stable of John Stuart, and an odd feature will be the sale of the owners contract on jockey R. "Bobby" Wright. This is the first time that we can recall that a riders contract went under the hammer. ... In the San -Juan Capistrano last winter, .St. Vincent showed that he is a whale of a horse on grass, but over the main track at Belmont he was never formidable and finished seventh in the Suburban. . . . The Desilu Stable, which won the first race at Hollywood Park this year, is owned by Desi Arnez and Lucille Ball. . . . Phil Drake, French-bred winner of the Epsom Derby, will be a powerful magnet in the Washington, D. C, International and it would really be something if the Laurel officials could obtain the entry of Swaps, Kentucky Derby winner. . . . Ruth and Eddie Arcaro celebrated their eighteenth wedding anniversary last Sunday. . . . Larry MacPhail will sell the best group of yearlings at Saratoga that he has ever offered. . . . The only 00,000 races in June will be the Belmont Stakes and The Galifornian, both to be run on June 11. ... E. P. Taylors Canadiana is now the greatest Canadian money winner of all time with earnings of 60,591. ... In 1954 a total of 3,750 foals were dropped at English, farms. *j «,■ ifjiii «lf ttii i- y t, if co j act
