: . 1 Chris Cross Wins Constitution Cap Gettinger Sophomore Gains Repeat Victory at Suffolk Over Favored Star Rover By FRED GALIANI SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 1. — After finally getting the hang of winning a race, M. M. Gettingers Chris Cross added the Constitution Handicap to his record here this afternoon, outfinish-ing Mrs. Irving Gushens Star Rover in a bumping stretch drive. Chris Cross, who had won his previous start after finishing * second three times in a row, scored by a neck over the favorite. Two and a half lengths back in- third place was Lazy F Ranchs Door Prize. Chris Cross paid 7 and covered the mile over the fast track in 1:37% and was ridden by Darrell Madden. A crowd of 10,828 attended on a perfect day for racing although the favorite players did not fare too well during the afternoon. The Constitution pitted a dozen three-year-olds and Chris Cross had only broken his maiden this April in Florida. He was often second but not -until lately has he been winning. As a two-year-old he ran in 10 races, finishing runner-up half that number of times. This season he has won three out of 16 starts and been second on seven occasions. The Constitution was worth ,500 to owner Gettinger. Raced Close Up Throughout Chris Cross, equipped with a shadow roll, was fairly close all through the running of the race. Queensware led Star Rover early, with Aeschylus, Red Perfume and Super Bug all preceding Chris Cross. Queensware maintained her lead until the far turn, where Star Rover moved up to challenge and soon forged ahead. At the same time Chris Cross launched his challenge and by the time they were midway of the turn had gone into second place, while Door Prize, moving from far back, passed horses on the outside and was soon thirJ. At the head of the stretch, Star Rover was daylight to the good, but opposition was threatening in Chris Cross and Door Prize, and Queensware was still in a contending position on the rail. Solimena, on Star Rover, applied his whip industriously but the favorite began to tire and bear out. Through the stretch Chris Cross doggedly wore the choice down, with the two of them finally bumping about 70 yards from the finish. In the final strides, Chris Cross outgamed his rival to stick his neck to the front. Door Prize was unable to make any inroads on the leaders margin as he finished out in the middle of the track, while Queensware succumbed to the late rush of Deep Thought to drop fourth money.
