j . „ 1 Weighing In By Eyan Shipman Misty Morn Breaks 32-Year-Old Record Stable Failed to Name Filly for Oaks Pedigree Stresses Stamina and Speed BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y.~ June 1.— Sentimentally concerned lest hosannahs for High Voltages stablemate, Misty Morn, should detract from the j . „ vast vast credit credit due due the the harder harder work- vast vast credit credit due due the the harder harder work- working member of the combination on . the occasion of her well merited Oaks victory last Saturday, we refrained from telling you about Misty Morns record breaking performance the previous afternoon here at Belmont. ~Now that High Voltage, honesty itself since she first made her debut as a juvenile at Jamaica early in April of 1954, has at last achieved her her great great objective objective with with a a spar- 1 her her great great objective objective with with a a spar- sparkling Oaks triumph, we can pay a just tribute to a latecomer among the top three-year-old fillies of the season, and one who — let us confess it — might well have deprived High Voltage of her hard-eamed crown had the Wheatley Stable not short-sightedly omitted to name her for this Oaks renewal. Misty Morn, a trim, light bodied daughter of Princequillo — Grey Flight, by Mahmoud, gave us all a strong hint that she was a good one when she out-gamed the highly respected California filly, In Reserve, in a hard drive some 10 days ago, but when, on Friday, she came back to concede chunks of weight to older mares and smash a track record for the mile and a sixteenth that had stobd for 32 long years, none of us could help but realize that this hitherto inconspicuous miss might well be the very best in her interesting division. Showed Racing Potential Only Recently According to trainer "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, Misty Morn was such a weedy little thing as recently as-two months ago that the stable saw no/ purpose in naming her for important stakes such as the Acorn and Oaks, this decision the more easily arrived at since they were "already well represented with High Voltage. Then, as has often happened with the get of this sire, the Princequillo filly suddenly, as if overnight, began to put on flesh, fill out and generally improve until, on Friday, the transformation was as complete as if a butterfly had emerged from a cocoon. Several starts in Florida last winter revealed little or nothing of special note, but at the beginning of this current Belmont meeting, Misty Morn ran creditably at a mile behind such high class colts as Jabneh and War and Peace. That last performance was her last trip behind the money and the final tightener for her victorious meeting with In Reserve and Fridays record shattering mile and a sixteenth. The only three-year-old in the small field, Misty Morn was conceding 10 pounds on the scale for the month of May to Carry the News, Old Baasket and Intencipn, and five pounds to Talora, the latter a slight choice. in the wagering because of this advan- tage. When it came to running however, Misty Morn simply played with her older opposition, Ted Atkinson holding her off Taloras swift pace until the head of the stretch and then smothering the early leader with speed to win at his pleasure. She was caught the distance over a strip that was lightning fast in 1:42. flat, lowering the mark set by Dot back in 23, and equalled in 41 by Hard Jester and in 43 by Bull Reigh, by one-fifth of a second, the erasing of this persistent fraction no small feat, we can tell you. Breaking the 1:42 into component parts, it reads: :23%, :46, Tr.10%, 1:35%, 1:42, while so jauntily did she saunter under the wire that an even lower mark did not appear beyond her capabilities. Rates Among Outstanding Performers Meditating Misty Morns race for several days, we believe that it ranks close to Helioscopes and High Guns Suburban as the outstanding thoroughbred performance of the current season. What it portends we do not know, but we seriously doubt whether any mem-_ ber of the Oaks field could have come close to Misty Morn at a mile and a sixteenth last Friday. Princequillo has already-given us two fine Coaching Club Oaks winners in How and her full sister, Cherokee Rose. The former particularly was not a prepossessing type as a juvenile, developing slowly, and we would have thought that, with How in mind, Misty Morns connections might have waited a little longer before dismissing her potentialities. We recently regretted in this space that Swaps, the Kentucky Derby winner, had not been nominated for the Belmont Stakes, suggesting that, by one means or another, the Belmont should be open to all the best three-year-olds. Not only is Misty Morn by a sire of classic winners in the French-bred Princequillo, she also -stems from a strong maternal family, one that can claim, such members as Native Dancer and the unbeaten juvenile of 38, El Chico. This present sensations dam is the stake-winning daughter of Mahmoud, Grey Flight. This young mare gave the Wheatley Stable the stake Vin-• ning Ambiorix colt. Full Flight, winner last season of the Leonard Richards at Delaware Park and the Sara-nac Handicap at Saratoga. Grey Flight in turn is out of Planetoid, El Chicos full sister. In a way, this breeding resembles that of Misty Morns stablemate, High Voltage. Both brilliant fillies have powerful staying blood from France on the paternal side of the house, while both also inherit intense speed from the dam. The speed with Misty Morn is represented by such names as Mumtaz Mahal, The Tetrarch and Ariel, while with High Voltage the maternal pedigree shows us Menow, Pharamond II., Royal Minstrel and Tetra-r i tenia, , »
