Mares Nest Stud, Inc. Buys 278-Ac re Nursery John W. Hanes, Leslie Combs II: Acquire Greentree Stud Property LEXINGTON, Ky., June 1.— Mares Nest Studj. Inc., a corporation recently formed by John W. Hanes and Leslie Combs n., today purchased from Greentree Stud, Inc., the 278-acre farm which John Hay Whitney formerly operated as Mares Nest Stud. The price was not disclosed. The Paris Pike tract has been operated as part of Greentree Farm since Whitney and his sister, Mrs. Charles Shipman Payson, took over Greentree upon the death of their mother, Mrs. Payne Whitney. Mares Nest, which is separated from Greentree by the farm of C. V. Whitney, was purchased, by John Hay "Jock" Whitney during the 30s from Col. Phil T. Chinn. Its name was a resul£ of the litigation through which Whitney went to gain a title to the land. Hanes and Combs plan to use Mares Nest as headquarters for the mares owned by them in partnership, a partnership which was bom several years ago when they got together and purchased the mares owned by William Goetz. That was a speculative venture, and since then most of the Goetz mares have been sold. However, they have gathered a band which now numbers eight, and these will be transferred to Mares Nest. They include Kirsch, Letmenow, Blue Eyed Momo, Carrycara, Royal Rite, Means of Grace, Obedient and-La Boheme. Hanes, a New York banker, lias been a member of The Jockey Club since 1952. He was chairman of the three-man Jockey Club committee — the other members, C. T. Chenery and Harry F.
