Torch of War Strives lor Balmorals Martinique Over Seven Foes on Turf Hasty House Runner Packs 124 Pounds, Giving Six to Nickies Boy and Eds Day WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., June 1. — The Martinique, six furlongs grass race, valued at ,250, will head Thursdays eight-race card as the Balmoral Jockey Club swings into the final half of its inaugural meeting at Washington Park. Eight speedsters, headed by Hasty House Farms Torch of War and Greenacres Stock Farms Mr. Prosecutor, were entered in the Martinique, which is billed as .the sixth race. Torch of War drew highweight of 124 pounds for the Martinique, three more than Mrs. O. S. Demings Warless and Reverie Knoll Farms Mon-Pharo. Wallace Strongs Nickies Boy and Calumet Farms Eds Day will each pack 118 pounds. Three Cubs, also owned by Strong, has a 112-pound assignment, as has Greenacres Stock Farms Mr. Prosecutor, while Valley View Farms Eternal Frolic, gets in with 107. Torch of War has not been postward since his sixth-place finish in the La Salle Handicap, Balmorals opening-day feature. It was his thirteenth start this year. He came to Chicago following a triumph in the Churchill Downs Handicap on April 30. Earlier he managed a pair of wins, three seconds, and two thirds in a Florida campaign. John Adams will pilot Torch of War. Warless is a performer who usually turns in his best races over grass courses. The son of Helippolis makes his Balmoral debut coming off a second in a Churchill Downs sprint behind Second Avenue. In four Florida outings the five-year-old collected one victory, that a six furlongs allowance dash. Mon-Pharo makes his 1955 debut in the Martinique. The eight-year-old had one win last year in 11 efforts, but turned in a pair of seconds and four thirds with earnings over 5,000. Nickies Boy will be making his third Balmoral start. His latest was behind Blue Violins winning performance last Saturday at six furlongs. He was victorious at Sportsmans Park. Eds Day makes his third attempt to parade postward during the Balmoral meeting. The Bull Lea colt was declared from two races last week. Eds Day hasnt started since January 26 at Santa Anita when he finished third in a middle-? distance event won by stablemate, Dixie Lad. Mr. Prosecutor makes his third Balmoral start. He was fourth and fifth in two six furlongs allowance events here. He was winless in three starts last year, not having won since May 9, 1953, at Churchill Downs. Three Cubs also has failed to enter the win column this year, being beaten in two Balmoral starts. Strong claimed Three Cubs last time out. Eternal Frolic was sixth her last out behind Betsy T. She was second to Spartan Jett before that. Both were six furlongs events.
