Thirteen Stellar Sophomores Meeting In Delaware Stakes at Garden State Barbizon, King Hairan, Clem Each Will Carry 124 Pounds In 0,650 Headliner Today By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J.. May 10. — Calumet Farms Barbizon, Leo Edwards and H. B. Masseys King Hairan and Frank C. Rand Jr/s Clem are just three of 13 three -year -olds who will spark national interest here Saturday as they match strides in the fifth running of the 0,650 Delaware Valley Stakes. The above three are required to shoulder the high of 124 pounds each under the conditions of the six furlongs dash, meaning a concession of from three to 12 pounds, but the interest is not ended there. This will undoubtedly be one of the best and most exciting sprints of the current season, the field containing a mixture of talent from the three-year-old ranks that includes those who already have been acclaimed as outstanding sprinters, and others who possibly could come up as chal- lengers in the Preakness, Belmont and this tracks own Jersey Stakes. They will be fighting Saturday for a winners share of Continued on Pogo Tern . Opposing the highweights, in order of assignments, are: P and W Stables Lucky George. 121: Carolyn K. Stables Pro-Brandy. 121: Claiborne Farms Bandit. 118; Mrs. John T. Maloneys Soft Day. 118; John S. Kellys Wassail. 118; Harford Stables Princeton. 115; Wm. G. Helis Jr.s True Verdict. 115: Mrs. Walter M. Jef fords Bakht. 112; Woodland Farms - High Sparkle. 112 and Brookfield Farms Irate. 112. King Hairan. High Sparkle and Bakht were the only three on the track this morning for final speed blowouts. Coinciden tally, each of them stepped off three-eighths of a mile in :3443 over the lightning "fast strip, although King Hairan worked from the gate while the other two were caught from a moving start. Barbizcn worked six furlongs in 1:1245 in handy style on Wednesday morning as his final preparation. High Sparkle and : Bakht have been training splendidly here all along, as has True Verdict. Trainer Jimmy Jones admitted that h*e may have rushed Barbizon along a little . too fast with his three races at Gulfstream Park this spring which, on top of a siege of virus, deprived him of a chance of being readied for the Kentucky Derby. The son of Polynesian and Good Blood was given a brief freshening up in Kentucky prior to shipping here last week and his trial on Wednesday indicates that he is sharp. The first race for Barbizon after winning The Garden State last fall was a six furlongs overnight purse at Gulfstream Park on March 5. He finished a soundly beaten third behind Jet Colonel and Encore. Jones j started him next on March 13, in the six and one-half furlongs Hutcheson Stakes, and this time he lost a nose decision to Jet Colonel while carrying 122 pounds and , coming within a fifth of a second of the j track record. His last sortie was in the mile and a sixteenth Fountain of Youth, in I which he finished fifth, although Calumet ! finished first and second with Gen. Duke , and lion Liege. The combination of Calumet Farm and William Hartack assures strong support for ! Barbizon, but favoritism still figures to be accorded to King Hairan. The Florida-bred could not quite manage Bold Ruler as a ! juvenile, but he was the champion over I nearly all others on the New York and New ! Jersey scene, winning eight stakes for earn-ings of 91,575, leaving him second only j to Greek Game in money won among the two-year-olds. King Harlan bounced back from an unsuccessful winter campaign to capture the six furlongs Swift Stakes over a sloppy track at Jamaica. Trainer Lennie Hunt tried to stretch him out in the one mile and a sixteenth Gotham, but the son of Kings Stride and Lady Hairan was done after a little more than six furlongs, and he was well beaten. Kin? Hairan made his last appearance finishing third in the Jamaica Handicap. He was hindered by a poor start from an : outside post position and Arcaro had to pick his way through the field. It was a good effort, in view of the circumstances, and he was carrying a 126 pounds, attempting to concede three to Clem and 14 to the winning Pertshire. Clem was shuffled back soon after the start of the Jamaica, and his also was a good effort in finishing two lengths in front of King Hairan. The son of Shannon II. finished third in the Gotham, and was third in the Swift Stakes, this time finishing a length and three-quarters behind King Hairan. without any excuses. His lone stakes victory was the Absecon Island over the turf last year at Atlantic City. High Sparkle is a full brother to the grand mare. Blue Sparkler, and was bred at Amory L. Haskells Woodland Farm near Red Bank, N. J. There will be a great deal of sentimental, as well as monetary backing on this colt, whose elder sister is acclaimed as the best mare bred in Jersey since Regret. The son of Knave High and Blue Tiara won his debut race as a two-year-old, and finished fourth to Ambehav-ing in the New Jersey Breeders Stakes, his only other start. He reached the leaders in the stretch turn in the Gotham Stakes, his initial outing this spring. , and then tired. In the Jamaica he broke slowly and had difficulty finding room at the head of the stretch, then finished willingly and was just a short distance behind King Hairan. His workouts since then indicate improved speed and he could well be the horse to beat Saturday. Claiborne Farms Bandit, won two of three starts as a juvenile and gained real recognition by coming out this season to defeat older horses in the Phoenix Handicap at Keeneland. The son of Fair Trial and Careless Nora ran six furlongs in a keen 1:09% under 112 pounds to outrun such accomplished rivals as Sea O Erin and Bernburgoo. Irate made a strong impression locally when he came out for the first race of his career here last Tuesday and towroped a band of maidens to the tune of 15 lengths, being eased, in an exceptional 1:11 for "six furlongs. Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Bakht, Harford Stables Princeton and William G. Hellis Jr.s. True Verdict are others who have gained a following through their promising form this spring and they also figure prominently.
