Kg * Reports From Foreign Racing Centers France • Declare Tyrone Out Of French Guineas By RALPH D. GRAINGER Our Paris Correspondent PARIS, Prance. — The classic situation between France and Britain is very intriguing. Honors ended even at Newmarket in the Guineas and many French visitors imagine that the clever victories of Crepello and Rose Royale will be repeated at Epsom next month. Both have been promoted strong favorites in British antepost volumes and no more than 14-to-l is available for the Derby-Oaks Double. A similar dual result would mean each camp with two victories and the Doncaster St. Leger would then become the decider of the "rubber" as it was last September. When the Newmarket trippers returned to Longchamp we listened with great interest to a divergence of opinion concerning the rocklike going being the gYeatest contributory factor in the defeat of Tyrone and Wayne in the colts classic. But the logic of that excuse can be questioned if only by the complete eclipse of the British fillies in the 1.000 Guineas by the Aga Khans Rose Royale and his sons stable-mate Sensualita — under precisely the same conditions — two days later. When analyzing the French Free Handicap back in January we thought that Tyrone was rather flattered by his top-rating and emphasized that Rose Royale, by Prince Bio, out of Rose of Yeroda, was a classic prospect among the fillies we had seen in action as juveniles. Curiously, Rose Royale is the first foal of her dam. Fallen from his pedestal. Tyrone is not to contest the French Guineas a week from Saturday, but Wayne is a probable starter on Longchamps watered going. Rose Royale who, incidentally, compensated trainer Alec Head for the vexatious defeat of Midget last May, remains in reserve for Epsom. Her owners Tehmany deputizes in the fillies first classic at Longchamp. Sensualita, who is by the American sire Polynesian, out of Peace of Mind, was bought as a yearling at Saratoga by Prince Aly Khan for 0,000 because he was anxious to acquire the maternal bloodlines. Sensualita ran surprisingly well at Newmarket. Earlier in the week at Le Tremblay her prior opponent Sindia, who had run Sensualita to a short-head three weeks before was easily beaten by some second-class rivals over the same track! That result appeared to place Sensualita, a 33-1 shot, at astronomical odds at Newmarket. She had evidently improved beyond all recognition and is to contest the Irish Guineas, a race Alec Heads bam won last year with Pierre Wertheimers Penderoba. Afterward she crosses to Royal Ascot for the Coronation Stakes. We are not going to believe that Crepello and Rose Royale are the "racing certainties" that others contend until we have seen the Strassburger colt Mourne once again in action. We think this son of Vieux Manoir the best young stayer in France, and have not forgotten that last season Mourne successfully conceded seven pounds to Tyrone and beat him two lengths over a mile. Reproduction of that display makes Mourne, at least, the equal of Crepello. And stable estimate is that Mourne is much superior to Wayne beyond a mile. At Maisons-Laffitte, within minutes of the announcement of Rose Royales success, we saw a new French star filly, Madame L. Volterras Kalidtia, by Tour-ment — Princesse dAmour Prince Bio sail by 14 rivals — with ridiculous ease — to win by ten generous lengths over 13 furlongs. It seemed more like 60 yards to us! For a filly that had never run in public, Kalidtia gave an astounding display of speed and stamina. Maxime Garcia rode her with supreme confidence. Trailing the field for ten furlongs Kalidtia, when near-ing the stretch, simply streaked through the pack like a guided missile. The unplaced even-money favorite Naurica, who had had previous experience, was passed effortlessly and though Herses and Coloratura were placed second and third it would be unwise to accept the bare result as a future formline. It is probable that Madame Velterrras faultless bay is superior to her Oaks heroine Sicarelle. Kalidtia is, we believe, Continued on Page FHty-Tltteo Report From France By RALPH D. GRAINGER Continued from Poqe Etqhi to have another race before Epsom. This Mathet -trained filly has proved her ability to get the Oaks trip, whereas Rose Royale is, as yet, still unproven. Madame has bright prospects of taking three Epsom classics in a row. At Longchamp last Sunday the line-up for the 4,000 Prix Noailles WM not quite of the same quality as in former years. Derby entrants Malacca and Preston are unlikely to make history at Epsom on their latest showing. Victory went to E. Martinez de Hozs 7 to 4 favorite Weeping Willow, a son of Priolo — Cordoba, trained by Percy : Carter and ridden by Fred Palmer. The | gray colt took- over from American Ber- j trand L. Taylors consistent Primesautier inside the last furlong to win cleverly by I just under a length with the other Derby j entrant Apostol, a neck away, third in a field of nine. Apostol finished fast after being impeded by the troublesome Elday. The 000 Prix de lEsperance over 15 furlongs, regarded as a test for the Grand Prix, on June 30, indicated that the Pollet-trained Altipan Pan — Guar-dienne will stay the trip better than most. G. Delloyes chestnut lay last of the 11 starters for 12 furlongs, but when Poincelet asked for response he found his mount full of running. Altipan took the lead from Magic North and the fading Malmoi at the distance to win easier than the half length suggests. Nearly two lengths divided Magic North and Malmoi. The remainder were well beaten off. We hear that Ralph B. Strassburger has sold his useful three-year-old Georgian to the Buddah stable. This bay son of Le Tyrol — Saipan has run two good seconds in useful company this season and should be well suited to American tracks. Georgian was embarked last week end. Interesting entry received for St. Clouds 0,000 Prix de Printemps is G. A. Oldhams Talgo, runner-up to Ribot for the Prix de lArc last October. "Gerry" was telling us that the going in England is becoming a nightmare on tracks where there is no artificial watering system. He proposes to fly Talgo over to France if there is no rain at Epsom before the Coronation Cup on June 6. The St. Cloud highlight is four days later. Serge Boullenger, twice consecutive champion jockey, is only tenth on the list at present. He has ridden only nine winners this term. Leon Plavien is tops with 21, M. Garcia next with 18, and R. Poincelet third with 16. Numerically, the two top trainers are D. Lescalle and M. Bona-venturo. fc
