High High King King Triumphs Triumphs Over Over Lark Lark Sun; Sun; Seven Seven May May Go Go to to Post Post in in Preakness Preakness Fast Public Prep js By Promised Land Gets Seven Panels in 1 :24|; Inside Tract to Seek Honors, One-Eyed King Is Declared By JOE HIRSCH PIMLICO. Baltimore. Md., May 15.— A virtual cease-fire reigned over the local front today for Saturdays 81st running of the historic Preakness Stakes, as the "big guns" — Calumets Kentucky Derby winner, Iron Liege. Wheatleys Bold Ruler and Clifford Lusskys Federal Hill — confined their preparations for the mile and three-sixteenth middle jewel of the Triple Crown to either a gallop or a walk. However, the status of the starting field changed slightly late this morning with the announcement from New York that the D and M Stable is shipping its Ace Admiral colt, Inside Tract, to Baltimore on Friday to participate in the week-ends festivities. Other Preakness "probables." in addition to those mentioned above, include Roslyn Farms Inswept. Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Promised Land and Mrs. Jules Schwartz Nah Hiss. Inside Tract 2,500 Claim Late this afternoon, upon his arrival from New York to saddle Jota Jota in the Black Eyed Susan, Cain Hoy Stable trainer, Woody Stephens, declared One -Eyed King from the Pieakness. Thus, seven horses are scheduled to go to the post in the Pimlico classic. Inside Tract was claimed at Jamaica last fall by his present interests for 2,500, and is now trained by the capable, young Jack Weipert Jr. The colt finished three-quarters of a length behind Glenelg Stables Assemblyman in New York on Monday at a mile and a sixteenth, and has won three of his nine starts this season. He won two of six attempts last year. Inside Tract seems to improve over a distance of ground, closes well and can handle an "off" track with some ability. The D and M Stable, incidentally, is the result of a recent partnership between Ray Continued on Poge Four Seven May Go to Post in Preakness Fast Public Prep By Promised Land Gets Seven Panels in 1:24|; Inside Tract to Seek Honors, One-Eyed King Is Declared Continued from Page One De Brino of Valatie, N. Y. and Joseph Mar-tino of Hudson, N. Y. Only Preakness probable on the work tab this morning was Nah Hiss, the "Cinderella horse," who went seven furlongs in 1:29"% handily. The homebred son of Call Over and the hard-hitting race mare Waymark was caught in fractions of-: 24% for the quarter, :48% for the half mile and 1:15 for the first six panels. Nah Hiss raced and won at a mile and an eighth in New York last week and appears thoroughly fit. Promised Land came out between the first and second races this afternoon and went an eye-catching seven furlongs in 1:24%. The Palestinian colt working easily, had fractions of :23%. :46%, 1:11% and galloped out the full mile in 1:Z9V5, only a fifth of a second off Federal Hills move yesterday. Apprentice Warren Vedilago handled Promised Land while trainer Hirsch Jacobs, complete in beige suit and stop watch, supervised the effort. "He worked fast enough," Jacobs was quoted as saying. "Ill probably blow him out through the stretch the morning of the race." Iron Liege, who looms the likely favorite for Saturdays classic, galloped "once around" this morning ,and is in excellent condition to pursue his quest of the Triple Crown. Trainer Jimmy Jones is expected here from Garden State tonight or tomorrow, and will probably remain through the week-end to supervise last-minute preparations. The strapping son of Bull Lea and Iron Maiden could get a brief blowout the morning of the race. Iron Liege Improving Horse: Jones Jones classifies Iron Liege as an improving horse, while jockey Willie Hartack emphasized the gameness he displayed when challenged in the final furlong of the Derby by Gallant Man. This is probably a better colt than people generally give him credit for being, and while a free-runner like Bold Ruler and Federal Hill, seems adaptable enough to lay just off the stiffest kind of pace and "dig in" during the run for the wire. Bold Ruler also galloped, the Nasrullah colt going perhaps a mile and a quarter, and may get a brief breeze on Friday. His interests seem satisfied with his condition and believe that his best race is good enough to beat Iron Liege and the others. Bart Sweeney, deputizing for trainer Jim Fitzsimmons who was due here late this afternoon opined this morning that the rains of the last two days should help to pack this sandy strip, making it just a bit firmer than it had been in some time. Because of the high humidity, Bold Rulers stall, like that of Iron Liege, has been outfitted with an electric fan to help circulate the still air and keep the colt in good hu* mor. Federal Hill, who got a sparkling mile in 1 : 39 yesterday, merely walked this morning and will gallop tomorrow. Stanley Rieser, who is filling in for his father Milton most of the trainers are absentees, it seems is well pleased with the way the son of Cosmic Bomb is coming up to the race and thinks he has a better than a fair crack at all the money. Rieser observed that Federal Hill layed right in on the turns in yesterdays move and thinks his colt will be thoroughly at home over the Pimlico oval. He emphasized that whoever gets the lead at the first turn on Saturday should have quite an advantage, which might indicate a trend of thought among the interests of the "big three." Inswept walked again today, following his good second to Bold Ruler in Mondays Preakness Prep, and trainer Downey Bon-sal plans to gallop him Thursday: Like the others, Bonsai is pleased with the way his colt is doing and thinks he may have a chance for at least part of the money on Saturday. Bonsais last Preakness horse was Montpeliers courageous Saratoga, who finished second to Nashua in 1955. In incidental news, Calumets Gen. Duke circled the shedrow this morning, and according to his groom, seemed to be walking as sound as ever. The Florida Derby winner was declared from the Preakness on Monday after a mile work and Jimmy Jones has scheduled an x-ray of his injured left front heel some time this week.
