L. I., N. Y., May 15.— Despite trying to bolt at the head of the stretch, Mrs. Mabel D. Lewis Happy Princess mildly amazed a crowd of 21,239 here this afternoon by winning the 3,600 Champlain Handicap by a neck over Ralph Lowes Jet Girl, who saved every possible inch of ground, but could not quite get up in time. Nelson I. Asiels Tarquilla was only a head farther back in the torrid finish of the six-i- furlong dash and a length and a half before Sanford Stud Farms Louise Bell. Brookfield Farms Infatuation was another length and a quarter off the board after getting the lead at the head of the stretch, while Ellis Farms strongly favored Little Pache was another rose away in sixth place after breaking very slowly. It was the first defeat in her last four starts for Little Pache and only the second stakes victory in the career of Happy Princess, who won the Interborough Cap here last fall. The veteran Ovie Scurlock rode the daughter of Princequillo. who paid 0.90 and required 1:11% over a track that was still sloppy. but was beginning to dry under a warm sun. Happy Princess, who is trained by Ger-3. aid E. Lewis, husband of her owner, earned a gross purse of 6,600, of which 50 was the nomination and starting fees. Mrs. John W. Hanes, wife of the president of the board of trustees of the Greater New York Association, presented the trophy to Mrs. Lewis in the winners circle. Filly Wasnt to Be Denied After the race, the underrated Scurlock said. She lost the lead three times, but wouldnt take no for an answer. She just kept plugging, away." Of Little Pache, Conn McCreary said, "All I can say is that 126 pounds didnt help her. It was a little too much." It was actually, two pounds more than Little Pache had carried in her last victory here. Myrtles Jet and Happy Princess in-" dulged in a duel for the lead at the start of the Champlain. while Little Pache walked out of the gate and Jet Girl, Louise Bell and Levee were also off sluggishly. Nearing the far turn, Myrtles Jet began to weaken and Infatuation moved into second place, a couple of lengths behind Happy Princess, while Royal Lark was in fourth place, followed by Scansion, Tar- quilla and First Asking. Happy Princess began to bear out nearing the final turn and Eddie Arcaro sent Infatuation up on the inside, while Raul Sterling seemed about to take the overland with Jet Girl, who was in high gear, but seeing the open-r ing along the rail, sent the Jet Pilot mare through. Happy Princess went so wide that she was two lengths behind Infatuation at the | furlong pole, but that filly faltered abrupt-_ ly and Scurlock was able to get the winner straightened away and dunning her hard-j est through the final eighth. At the same time. Jet Girl surged up on the rail, while Tarquilla was also closing strongly. Happy Princess was tiring again at the very end, but had enough left to stave off Jet Girl, who outfinished Tarquilla. Louise Bell, who usually has early speed, actually closed fastest of all. Archibald C. Randolphs Gang News was awarded the third race on the disqualifica-j tion of A. J. Meslers heavily favored Para- : dise Peak, who led him by two and a half lengths at the finish, but gained most of that advantage by swerving over sharply leaving the gate and "sawing off" Bennie j Greens mount. Medilex Farms Marjos Duke was three and a half lengths further back in third place at the end of this juve- ! nile dash, and four lengths before Mrs. D. H. Peters Incitatus. Trainer Kay Jensen and jockey Rogelio Trejos collaborated in a double when they followed the victory of Poplar Branch in the opening dash by taking the fourth event with Mrs. Jensens Judy Darling, who reached the end of the six furlongs a length before Dae Stables Blue Lyric.
