, ♦ i : — — Narragansett Hikes Stakes Distribution Six Races Worth 10,000 Will Be Run During Summer Meeting Opening on July 1 PAWTUCKETT, R. I., May 15.— Narragansett Park today announced an increased stakes schedule for the 26 -day summer meeting which runs from July 1 through July 30. The track will offer six added money features worth a total of 10,000 at the coming session. Last year, there were four stakes carrying 5,000 in added money at the summer meet. Racing secretary M. C. Ty Shea has made a more equitable distribution of the stakes money in compiling this years schedule, which has been approved by the board of directors of the Narragansett Racing Association at a meeting this week. The Providence Stakes, the traditional "big" race for sophomores at Gansetts summer meet, has been halved in value from 0,000 to 5,000, but the Governors Handicap has been increased from 5,000 to to 5,000. 5,000. to to 5,000. 5,000. In addition, Narragansett will present one new stakes this year and revive another after a 10-year lapse. The Independence Day Handicap will be inaugurated on the Fourth of July, matching three-year-olds at a mile and 70 yards. It has been endowed with 0,000 for its first running. The Bristol Handicap, last run in 1947, will join the list of active stakes on July 27. It is a six furlongs test for three-year-olds and up with 0,000 added. Increase of ,000 Each The two other stakes on the Gansett agenda— The King Philip Handicap and the Narragansett Nursery— also have been increased in value, each now being worth 5,000 as against 0,000 last ear. The King Philip, for three-year-olds and up at a mile and one-sixteenth, will be run on July 6, while the Nursery Stakes, a five and one-half furlong dash for two-year-olds, will be decided on closing dav July 30. The Providence Stakes, won last year by the Keystone Stables Piecesof eight, will be run for the 12th time this summer. The mile and an eighth sophomore test is scheduled for Saturday, July 13. The co-featured Governors Handicap, for three-year-olds and up, has been set for the following Saturday, July 20. It is also at a mile and an eighth. The Governors is the oldest stakes on the Narragansett roster, being run continuously since the track opened in 1934. Stakes books are now in the mail to horsemen all over the country. Nominations for all six added money features close at midnight, Monday, June 24.
