River Downs First Book Of Conditions Released Purse Outlay of 58,400 for 11 -Day Period; Card Turf Races CINCINNATI. Ohio, May 15.— A purse distributioa of 58,400 — a slight increase over last years record figure — has been announced by Leon Slavin, president and general manager of River Downs race course, for the first quarter of the 44-day meeting opening May 24 running through July 13. James P. Ross Jr., new racing secretary of the scenic one mile oval on the banks of the Ohio River, released his first condition book, which reveals a total of eight races on the 50,000 turf course at River Downs. The turf course was installed late last season by Slavin and his brother, William, owners of the track, and it is now regarded as one of the most beautiful grass courses in the country. Ross* condition book shows a minimum purse of ,500 and a minimum claiming price of ,000 — both the same as the record-settling figures of last seasons meeting, third under the Slavin brothers regime. Top money event listed in the first condition book is the ,500 Memorial Day Handicap on May 30— a six furlong race for three-year-olds and up. Secondary money race is the ,700 River Downs Handicap on June 1. This is a one mile event on the turf course for three -year-olds -and upward. River Downs again will feature its historic "Marathon Series." First in this string is scheduled on the second day of the meeting — May 25 — and is for four-year-olds and up at a mile and one -sixteenth. Second in the "Marathon Series" is June 1 for four-year-olds and up at a mile and a furlong.
