Laurel Play Averages ,050,549 Nine-Race Cards For 28-Day Meet Per Diem Attendance of 11#480 Also Satisfactory; Bishop Tops Owners Again By Staff Correspondent Laurel Race Course conducted a highly successful spring meeting of 28 days, statistics compiled by Daily Racing Form reveal. The daily average mutuel handle for Laurels first session of nine-race programs was ,050,549 and the average attendance was 11,480. Last years figures for eight-race cards were ,053,320 and 12,526, respectively. As was the case in 1958. there was only a one-day conflict with Garden State Park, both tracks being in operation on May 2, closing day at the Maryland course. The April 18 program, which featured the Chesapeake Stakes, lured the biggest crowd of the season, 20,203. and the largest mutuel play— ,745,385. Mrs. Ada L. Rices Talent Show was the leading money-winning horse, his victory in the Laurel Maturity realizing a net purse of 2,238. Walter M. Jeffords Piano Jim. who accounted for the Laurel Handicap, was second high with 0,593, while William Hal Bishops Petes Folly, the Wilwyn Handicap winner, was third with 1,726. Rare Rice, also from the Rice string and winner of the Chesapeake, ranked fourth with 8,850. Stable Earns 5,300 The William Hal Bishop Stable was the leading money-winning owner and Bishop was the leading trainer. The Anna, 111.-owned stable won 5,300 through 16 wins, 18 seconds and 27 thirds. The Rice stable was second high with 9,747, while Jeffords was third with 0,593. Bishops performance in the owners rank was a repeat effort, he having led at Laurel last spring with 1,955. He had 16 wins at that meeting, too. Last spring Bernard B. Bond beat out Bishop for training honors, 17 to 16, but this year, Bishop reversed Jhe decision, 16 to 10. Another Bond, J. Bowes, tied for third with Frank A. "Downey " Bonsai, each having nine victories. Howard Grant also was a repeater, leading the jockeys with 36 successes. He accepted 134 mounts, the same number as in 1958, and had 27 per cent winners. However, in 58 he had 42 winners, so had 31 per cent winrers. Joe Culmone was second with 28, followed by Robert E. Corle with 25. The largest Daily Double return was made on April 8 when the combination of Radiate II. and Jerrys Gem paid 72.40. Favorites did very well at the meeting, which marked the first Laurel session with nine-race programs. Of the 252 races decided, 96 were won by favorites for 38 per cent winners.
