Chico Not Eligible to Futurity Owners Contemplating Retiring the 1938 Juvenile Champion. PIMLICO.M d Sept. 30. Visions of 1939 three-year-old honors, the Preakness and the Woodlawn Vase, the Belmont and glory at Saratoga in August; some to be realized and others to be just everlasting visions are the emotions experienced by owners and trainers candidates for the 1938 Pimlico Futurity and the Walden. And for the sufficient reason that these are the first and most important two-year-old events of the year to be decided over a distance greater than a mile and nearer the distances at which the great three-year-old contests are decided. Victory in either or both of these races, even second, third and fourth placing, is proof that a heretofore unknown quantity has shown ability to win or be in the contention over a distance of ground; the happiest and most encouraging indication any trainer or owner can ask of a two-year-old thoroughbred. STARS TO BE SEEN. Thus Pimlico, probably not destined to be the scene of El Chicos defense of his current two-year-old championship title, is certain to be host to next years early favorites for the triple crown title winner of the Preakness, Derby and Belmont if there is to be such a great thoroughbred in 1939. Unfortunately El Chico was not nominated to any of the Futurities and his owners are reported to be preparing to retire him for the year. However, the colt may be made eligible by October 3, to the ,500 added Walden, to be decided over a distance of a mile and one-sixteenth on November 8, vhere he would, undoubtedly, meet the outstanding candidates for the rich Futurity, run five days later. Of the two events, the Pimlico Futurity takes rank over the Walden from the standpoint of monetary return, with an estimated gross value of 8,000. Eligibles to this race were named in 1935 under future conditions for the produce of mares served that year foals of 1936. At present there are 114 eligibles, representing fifty-five interests, which seems to assure an excellent starting field for the race on November 12. FIRST RENEWAL IN 1907. The Walden has enjoyed an uninterrupted history since Jubilee won the first renewal in 1907. Among the ninety-odd thoroughbreds which have finished in the money in the Walden as juveniles more than a score went on to .memorable careers as division champions and stakes winners, among them being War Cloud, Display, Broomspun, The Porter, Discovery, Twenty Grand and Cavalcade. Not easily forgotten is Nedayrs remarkable feat of winning both the Futurity and the Walden within a space of five days at Pimlico last autumn.
