Japanese Swimmer Selected As Asian Athlete of 1949 SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.. May 5 UP. — Champion swimmer Hironoshin Furu-hashi will be awarded a Helms Athletic Foundation silver plaque today in honor of his selection as the Asian athlete of the year in 1949. Furuhashi and fellow swimmers of the Japanese swimming team are visiting here for two days before returning to Japan. They have been touring South America. Duncan Ikedoi, editor of the Nichi Bei Times, is in charge of the dinner arrangements for the event. W. R. "Bill" Schroe-der, Helms Foundation managing director, will make the presentation. The swimming star was honored by the Los Angeles Helms organization last year after he ■set world records" in the 400, 800 and 1500 meter races at the national swimming championships.
