DETROIT TURF NOTES $ Sun Portland, Mrs. Silas B. Masons Detroit Derby eligible, worked a mile in 1:43 and galloped out a mile and a furlong in 1:57 shortly after the third race Wednesday afternoon. With the addition of the blinker equipment and under the direction of jockey Willie Carroll, the Illinois Derby winner began his task at the stand and in hand throughout was timed the quarter in :25, the half in :50 and the three-quarters in 1:16. Considering the slow condition of the racing strip, it was a very creditable work.
