r j Here and There on the Turf j I Brevity an Afternoon Horse Tires Badly in Final Trial J I Hardings Resignation Expected j Bay Bubble Ruling Laughable J i . 1 Brevity concluded his training for the Belmont Stakes yesterday morning by working a mile and one-quarter and galloping out an additional quarter to cover the full distance of Saturdays race. The son of ! Sickle and Ormonda appeared very tired as he finished the trial but that has happened before with him. In his last workout for the Kentucky Derby, Joseph E. Wideners good three-year-old appeared anything but a champion and even at Hialeah Park his efforts in preparation for the Florida Derby failed to make any impression with the rail-birds. Brevity has looked bad in his workout so frequently this season that now no one pays any attention to the matter, least of all trainer Peter Coyne who knows his colt better than any one. After all, Coyne prepares his horses in the morning to run in the afternoon and in the case of Brevity blinkers are used in races but not in workouts and that equipment makes all the difference with the Chance Shot or Sickle colt. A phase of the Belmont receiving much attention from horsemen is the question of how the various candidates will like the mile and a half distance. Because Granville was caught from behind in the Suburban at a mile and one-quarter, it has been said that he will find the Belmont route too much for him, especially with 126 pounds up instead of the 108 pounds impost he carried last Saturday. In the Belmont all the other starters will be carrying 126 pounds and they will be Granvilles own age also and so the additional two furlongs wont make any difference to him. Some observers even have the idea that Brevity will find the route of Saturdays classic beyond his ability but Coyne doesnt feel that way. He thinks the Widener colt will run as far as horses are asked to go. In both the Kentucky Derby and the "Withers, in which he was knocked back at the start, Brevity made up many lengths, losing the Blue Grass special by a head and the latter race by two lengths. The Derby was at a mile and one-quarter and the Withers at a mile and in the shorter race Brevity did not have the chance to overtake White Cockade. However, in the Derby the Widener colt was able to get to Bold Venture in the stretch but it required such an effort that he had little else but courage left for the final fight and Morton Schwartz ace beat him to the wire. Brevitys performance in the Kentucky Derby was sufficient to stamp him as a stayer as Wayne Wright had to keep after him all during the final mile. In the Belmont Brevity will be under restraint during the first mile if he isnt knocked down leaving the post and should have plenty of speed and stamina available for the final half mile. The resignation of John P. Harding as president of the Washington Park Jockey Club has been expected for some time because the popular Chicago business man iContinued on Jijteenth page.l HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. and civic leader found the duties of heading a racing association required more time and attention than he could give. A successor to Harding probably will be named within a few days and he undoubtedly will be a man of prominence and position. Meanwhile, the operation of the track remains in the capable hands of Roy Carruthers. With the announcement of the new president may also come a statement regarding the plans for the thirty-one day meeting, starting August 3, insofar as stakes are concerned. When Washington Park held its meetings in June the feature attraction was the American Derby, but now that the Homewood course will be operated in August such a three-year-old event is almost out of the question. However, a worth while race may be expected as a substitute. Rockingham Parks stewards suspended Bay Bubble after her winning effort Monday because of inconsistency. In eighteen previous trips to the post this season, the Bubbling Over filly was victorious seven times and second upon eight occasions. She could be better termed a jewel of consistency. Tom Thorp and his associates probably could find more flagrant cases of in-and-out running. Baby Talk, which defeated a colt like Jean Bart at Pimlico, was beaten by Understand in his first Hawthorne start, but he wont be fooling when the distance is stretched out to nine or ten furlongs, the more the better. Coldstream will do no more racing this season as he suffered a badly bowed tendon in the Suburban Handicap running. He is the first son or daughter of Bull Dog in Alex Gordons stable to go lame. Scintillator is not eligible for the National Stallion Stakes but Alvin Untermyer appears to have a fine prospect in Gurkha, a son of Gallant Fox, narrowly beaten by Advocator Monday. Optic, stablemate of the latter and third in the race, is Joseph E. Wideners principal hope for the rich Juvenile Stakes.
