SALEMS SURPRISE WINNER Cristate Accounts for Press HandicapRoustabout Runs Second. Chesney Horse One of Numerous Outsiders to Score Flamenco Sets Early Pace and Tires. SALEM, N. H., June 2 Cristate, was a surprise winner of the Press Handicap, todays feature at Rockingham Park, traveling a mile in the fast time of 1:38 under the colors of Mrs. J. Chesney to beat the well backed Roustabout, from the C. V. Whitney stable, a head. W. A. Jones Boston Brook finished third, a length and a half behind the second horse. Araho Stables New Deal was a laboring fourth under the top weight of 120 pounds. Carleton H. Palmers imported horse, Flamenco, set the pace to the far turn then tired and finished last. Boston Brook, which had chased the leader closely from the start, took the lead when Flamenco tired and was still in front as they hit the head of the stretch. Cristate was moving up very fast, however, and Joey Wagner put him under pressure to get a close decision. Roustabout finished very fast and passed the tiring Boston Brook to take second honors. New Deal appeared to be anchored under the weight and never loomed up as a serious factor. The winner was one of the numerous long shots of the day, paying 2.80 in the tote. The sport was decided under bright skies and the day was the warmest since the meeting opened. Some 7,000 fans were present. Dixie Princess, carrying Miss A. Doris silks, came from behind to get the decision in the three-quarters event that opened the sport She took the lead in the stretch, coming from seventh place to beat Suburban Stables Sophist by half a length. Mrs. P. A. Shaws Bank Holiday was third, another half a length back, and B. N. Kanes Anna-rita finished fourth in the field of a dozen. it. Greenock, a heavily played favorite, from the stable of T. F. Swords, won the second race, coming from behind on the stretch turn to score by a neck over Dean Swift, from Miss L. C. Whites stable. D. J. Sullivan III.s Takus ran third, two lengths back of the runner-up. Count Dean was another half a length back in fourth place. Takus set the pace to the stretch, where Hightshoe drove the winner up fast on the outside. He came over fast in the stretch to pass the tiring Takus, and drove home ahead of Dean Swift after. a hard fight in the last seventy yards. The time was 1:13, fast for this; course. The third, in which two highly regarded good things ran out of the money, was won" by a 100 to 1 :shot, Miss Rose Siedenbergs Khay. He paid 03.50 when he got home by a nose in front of Pretty Pal, the. latter taking the place by a length over Foxo. Outsiders made a clean sweep of the race. The second horse paid 1.20, and the third horse paid 8.00 to show. r Samuel S. Sands Tied Wagon scored by a length in the fourth, over six furlongs. The Canter gelding was ridden but by Mann to triumph "by a head over Cary T. Graysons Stage Whisper, with F. W. Woodmans Little Dinah thirdin. the field of eight that started. Sanctity for which there was a heavy comeback money play, was fourth. Red Wagon set the pace "from the start to finish pursued most closely for the greater part of the distance by Little Dinah. Johnny Longden rode his second winner of the afternoon when he brought home Easiest Way, which wore blinkers today and was well regarded by his stable, under the silks of A. G. Tarn. Geneva Cross was only half a length back of the winner after being in tight quarters, on the stretch turn, where Luther was forced to take back. He came again in the stretch and for a moment it appeared he would win, despite his misfortune but his early efforts had taken too much out of him and he hung slightly at the end. He was half a length clear of Mrs. Ed Haughtons Grandpas Boy for the place award as they passed the judges.
