T HAWTHORNE TURF NOTES s -4 The condition of Howard Mann, who is fighting for his life in Augustana Hospital, was not encouraging Tuesday afternoon. Reported as weaker than at any time since undergoing a major operation a week ago, his condition was regarded as "very low" by hospital attendants. Racing secretary Julius G. Reeder received the nomination of Myrtlewood for the ,000 added Hawthorne Sprint Handicap to be run on June 13. The entry was forwarded from Lalonia by Ray Kindred, trainer of the Brownell Combs filly. Nominations for the Hawthorne Sprint close next Saturday. Yellow Tulip, victorious over a smart band of juveniles at Dcroit Monday, is a prospective starter in the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap here Saturday. He is owned by the Boraar Stable. Charles McLennan and I?oy Dickerson were visitors Tuesday. McLennan plans to remain until June 10 when he will leave for Suffolk Downs and Dickerson intends to visit in New York before taking up his duties as starter at Arlington Park where McLennan serves as racing- secretary. Dnieper. Mrs. P. A. B. Wideners candidate for the Chicago Derby, Detroit Derby and other stakes for three-year-olds, came through with another sparVling- trial when he ran a mile on a muddy track and around the "dogs" here Tuesday morning in 1:44. He negotiated the half mile in :51 and three-quarters in 1:17. The mare Attilla, a daughter of Tea Caddy, died recently while foaling at the farm of Carl Nusbaum near Hartland, Wis. She was the dam of several winners. Copies of the second condition book of the meeting were distributed from the office of secretary J. G. Reeder Tuesday morning. Following a visit of four days, C. W. Per-shall and his family have returned to their home in Granite City, HI. His son, S. E. Pershall. is returning for Saturdays racing. The senior Pershall is the owner of a useful stable trained by Tommy Root.
