SUPREME TEST FOR H0LLYR00D AND RUSHAWAY . ; : a , 1 Q. W CHICAGO DERBY CLIMAX Victory for Either Will Establish Standing Among Three-Year-Olds. Headley Colt Regains Some of Lost Prestige in Detroit Derby . Excuse for Rushaway. As a victory for Hollyrood or Rushaway ii Saturdays revival running of the 5,00C added Chicago Derby may partly untangle the scrambled situation now existing in the three-year-old division, the result of the race, Hawthornes richest stake and to be decided over a mile and a quarter, takes on added importance. Hollyrood, fresh from his conquest of a strong field in the 5,000 Detroit Derby fo his first victory of the year, can reclaim more of the prestige lost when he failed in early spring engagements should he take the Hawthorne race for his second major 36 stakes success. On the other hand, a victory Saturday would return Rushaway to the forefront among those of his age campaigning at this time, a position relinquished when he went down to defeat in the Detroit Derby. If Hollyrood and Rushaway are the performers their connections and admirers believe them to be, they may fight it out for top spoils and honors in Saturdays prize, though among the ten or so others also expected to start arc several others of proven- quality. However, on the basis of top performances this season and last, Hollyrood and Rushaway appear the ones to beat in the Hawthorne race. HANDICAPPED AT START. In the Detroit Derby, Rushaway, which previously had won the Latonia, Illinois and Louisiana Derbys, lessened his chances by going into the air at the start and, from all accounts, might have been fighting it out with Hollyrood and the other leaders had he left the starting point in good style. This factor in his Detroit success leaves Hollyrood yet to establish his superiority over the triple Derby winner. Three weeks before the Detroit race Hollyrood was beaten six lengths by Rushaway in the Latonia Derby at the same distance as the Chicago Derby, but Hollyrood has improved greatly in recent weeks and next Saturday may be capable of an even finer performance than his Detroit Derby effort. Owned by H. Price Headley, Hollyrood may have as a running mate in Saturdays race the classy filly Sparta, which placed second in the Detroit Derby. Though both were nominated almost at the last minute, exact plans of the stable have not been announced. Still at Detroit, the Headley three-year-olds were prcccdod here by Rushaway, owned by A. G. Tarn, and the less formidable Chicago Derby hopefuls. Tatterdemalion, property of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, and J. L. Roberts Tugboat Frank. Tatterdemalion finished third and Tugboat Frank fourth in the Detroit Derby. TUESDAYS ARRIVALS. The Whitney, Tarn and Roberts three-year-olds arrived at the scene of their next engagement shortly before noon Tuesday. Rushaway was accompanied by Vellum a stable companion, while Tatterdemalion travelled unescorted and eight others, also owned by Roberts, came along with Tugboat Frank. Advices from Detroit indicate that Head-leys starter or starters will not be shipped before Wednesday night and possibly not until twenty-four hours later. Sir Jim James property of D. W. Duffy and winner of the Detroit Derby Trial over Rushaway and others, though he was not nominated for the Detroit Derby, is another candidate coming from the Motor City. Hawthorne officials Tuesday were awaiting word from trainers J. T. Taylor and F. P. Letellier as to the Derby status of Mrs. S. B. Mason s He Did and Letelliers Billbo. He Did is in New York .nd Billbo at Latonia. Brookmeade Stables Gean Canach and King Ranchs Split Second, also in New York, are listed as doubtful starters.
