JACK PATCHES EQUALS RECORD Cosgrave Stable Campaigner Dominates Feature on Semi-Final Day of Long Branch Meeting. TORONTO, Ont, June 16. Showing his best brand of speed and dominating the race from the beginning, Jack Patches, swift running three-year-old son of Jean Valjean and Under the Rose, in the light blue and gold livery of the Cosgrave Stable, scored his third success in six starts this season and equalled the track record for a mile and one-sixteenth when he defeated H. Rv Bains Stack Arms, Mrs. W. J. Skenes" Osirian and another trio, of three-year-olds that met in the fifth and best offering at Long Branch for the semi-final day of the spring meeting. Exhibiting fine speed, the Jean Valjean gelding was never extended at any stage of the journey to run the distance in 1:44 and account for his victory by four lengths, which could easily have been increased at the will of his veteran pilot, Pat Remillard. He was well in hand while Stack Arms and Osirian staged a spectacular duel for second place, with the honor falling to the Bain colorbearer when he rallied tenaciously inside the final sixteenth to whip the Skene starter by three-quarters of a length. Back of these Far and Fast, a previous winner at the meeting, easily maintained a big gap over Crinoline and Sky Warrior, the only others engaged. There was little to the running of the principal race as Jack Patches opened up a commanding advantage after being straightened out in the back stretch, and he never slackened his pace to equal the best time for the distance established by Khorasan in the spring of 1933. The winner ruled second choice to L, Gentrys Far and Fast, which also carried top weight of the party, and it marked his first local success, his previous triumphs coming during the Maryland Jockey Club meeting at Pimlico.
