CUBAN RIDER THE STAR Riding of A. Fernandez Features Fridays Racing at Latonia. Mack Garner Pilots Both Winners of "Daily Double," Paying Largest Return of Meeting. LATONIA, Ky., June 19 Victorious long shots in several of the early races and sparkling horsemanship by the Cuban rider, Antonio Fernandez, who booted home three winners, provided a lively afternoon of sport at the Latonia Jockey Club track this afternoon. The success of outsiders in the second and third races resulted in the largest "Daily Double pay-off of the current season, a return of ,092, with three tickets being sold on the combination. Incidentally, the veteran Mack Garner was astride both winners in the combination. The Altamont Purse, over the mile and seventy yards route, brought out six contestants in the sixth and feature race offered and the winner was R. L. Bakers Yantis, a candidate for the forthcoming Independence Day Handicap. The brown gelding, an even money choice in the betting, held a length and a half edge over H. Friedbergs Pre War. He was the third consecutive favorite to register. J. P. Halls Airforce landed third money. It was Yantis fourth start at this meeting and his initial victory of the year, but the son of Waygood Manicure achieved his success in impressive fashion, coming from behind to overhaul Pre War and though it was necessary for jockey Harry Louman to urge the Baker standard bearer in the last seventy yards, he gave evidence of having rounded to his best form. Pre War was sent into the lead rounding the clubhouse turn, followed by Chatuga, Ping and Yantis, and this order was maintained for three-quarters of a mile. Then Yantis moved into second position and after duelling with Pre War for a sixteenth of a mile the gelding assumed the lead. Yantis drew away to a comfortable margin but appeared to be weakening from the effort in gaining his position and had to be roused to retain his margin. The veteran reinsman, Mack Garner, piloted both ends of the "Daily Double" when he landed the long shot, Chrysostle, winner in the third event and three holders of the winning combination of Henry M. and Chrysostle received ,092 for "Daily Double" tickets. Chrysostle won by the margin of a nose from Wise Dora, while Pretty Russell took down third money. Individual straight tickets on Chrysostle were redeemed for 8.80 each. It was a close and stirring finish, the result being so close that the placing judges called for a photograph, which disclosed the Continued on twent-first page. CUBAN RIDER THE STAR . The third event was over the mile and seventy yards distance, and Arthur M. displayed most early speed and went out to set the pace, while Chrysostle was shuffled back and forced wide entering the second turn. Garner took his charge to the outside for racing room at this point and gradually worked up to fourth position when the stretch was reached. Wise Dora was showing the way, with Wavy Sea second, and Arthur M. third. Moving rapidly under strenuous urging, Chrysostle whittled down the leaders, getting to Wise Dora as the pair went under the wire almost as a team. Under energetic handling and lucky to find an opening on the rail entering the final quarter, A. L. Fergusons Miss Wise handily accounted for the opening race of the day, a six furlongs sprint bringing together eight starters. Robert S. was second, two and a half lengths off the winner, while Jay D. drew up in third place. Jay D. established the pace, but was closely followed by Robert S. arid Miss Wise for half a mile of the journey. At this point jockey Antonio Fernandez sent the chestnut filly through on the rail and she moved to the fore. Just Buck, the favorite, could do no better than land, fourth. The second straight outsider dashed down in front in the second race when Henry M., grouped in the mutuel field, trounced ten others in easy fashion, registering by three lengths. Queen Irene was second, with Ariel Gold next in line. After acting somewhat badly while at the starting gate, Henry M. was away flying and took the lead after traveling the first quarter. When straightened away in the stretch H. M. Walkers colorbearer steadily added to his margin, finishing the five and a half furlongs sprint with something in reserve. The "fielder" paid 1.60 for straight. Jockey A. Fernandez scored a double for the day when he brought the Shady Brook Farms Chauvenet from far out of it to earn an easy victory in the fourth race on the card. Eddy Lee finished second and the tiring Rettef was third. Rettef and Eddy Lee staged a duel for the right to set the pace, each managing to show the way a part of the six furlongs, while Chauvenet plodded along until approaching the final quarter. When Fernandez, who had previously scored with Miss Wise in the opening event, called on his mount the chestnut gelding swept past the leaders and steadily drew into the clear, reaching the finish line three lengths to the good. Epitome carried Fernandez to his third success when the chestnut gelding came from a good ways out of it to easily account for the fifth race and thereby make it a double for A. L. Fergusons colors. Crulia was second and Col. Julian third in the five and a half furlongs dash for two-year-olds. Col. Julian showed the way for most of the journey, but was not able to gain very much of an advantage over his rivals. However, when Epitome challenged in the last quarter he rapidly caught the leaders and held a margin of three lengths at the end. Epitome was the second favorite in a row to win, following a run of long shots.
