BUD SMITH, in close quarters soon after the start, got through an opening around the far turn to reach a contending position and, getting through on the inside of SILVER BANQUET around the. stretch turn, opened up a good lead to win in hand. SILVER BANQUET set the early pace and displayed more courage than usual in the drive. RAINY DAY ran a cood race. COLONEL LE closed some ground. DOROTHY R. was on the outside all the way. STAR CLOUD led all the way under a Hustling ride and had enough left to win handily from RUNHELEN. The latter saved ground where possible and, continuing well, was gaining slowly at the end. GRAZING made up ground steadily. TOPSY BEHAVE finished fairly well. ST. IVES, off poorly when his jockey was caught napping, had little chance. TEXLAND raced on the outside and could not keep up. SHEPS CHANCE followed HER REVEILLE closely in the early part, forged to the front in the stretch to lake a short lead and outfinished WELL DRESSED. The latter, in close quarters in the early running, reached a prominent position in the stretch and, going well to the end, barely missed. IJER REVEILLE displayed fine early speed, but tired in the stretch. COTLO BESS was in early trouble. LIGHT ZEPHYR was knocked hack at the start and raced around the field while making his move. MONKS FIRST, never far from the pace, came fast sfter entering the stretch to catch DOMINANT STAR and had enough left at the finish to hold SCRIP MONEY. The latter, off poorly, was in close quarters while working her way into contention and raced very wide around the stretch turn, but finished fast and was gaining. THOUGHTFUL showed a good effort despite meeting with interference in the stretch. LEPIDUS closed ground. GEORGIA LILLY and DOMINANT STAR quit in the stretch. CHIEF EVERGREEN moved up strongly after going a half mile and, catching DARRAUGH in the stretch, bested the latter narrowly in a hard drive. DARRAUGH opened up a good lead rounding the first turn and increased his advantage in the back stretch, but, although responding gamely to urging when challenged, could rot resist the winner. BANKER CONARD ran his usual good race and was well up all the way. CLOIDO finished close up. A LA CARTE was shut off rounding the first turn, then made a bid in the back stretch, but tired in the run home. BUBBLER pulled up very lame. Scratched 27340 Cordon Bleu, 108; 27336 Imelda, 106. SHABONEE responded gamely to hard urging in the stretch and raced well to the finish. SANTA ANITA showed a good effort and was going well at the end. REGISTERITE closed some ground.
