LARGE CROWD DESPITE HEAT Final Ladies Day at Omaha Attracts Big Attendance St. Ives Disappoints. OMAHA, Neb., June 19. Despite the oppressive heat, an exceptionally large crowd turned out for the final Ladies Day at Ak-Sar-Ben field, Friday. The majority got off to a good start when Bud Smith, the favorite, won the first race, but were disappointed when St. Ives, the short-priced favorite, failed to finish in the money in -the second event. Bud Smith, ridden by the veteran P. Van Pelt, was easily bes"t in the opener and overcame some interference to win easily from Silver Banquet, the early pacemaker, while third money went to Rainy Day. The race was for Nebraska-breds, and it was the second straight win for Bud Smith. Jockey R. Tilden made a mess of it on St. Ives in the second race. After the colt had lunged thxough the gate several times, Tilden almost fell off at the start, and the animal was off slowly. St. Ives, although closing well to be fourth, never had a chance. The race was won by the maiden Star Cloud, from the stable of J. Alley. Jockey H. Simmons," who is staging a fine comeback here, put up a hustling ride on Star Cloud to defeat Runhelen by almost one length, while Grazing was third. A good card has been arranged for Saturday when Barney Ross, welterweight champion of the world, will be guest of honor. The feature race, named the Barney Ross Handicap, brings out the finest horses quartered at the track.
