DUFFERIN INAUGDMTODAY Torontos Popular HaLf-Mile Track Throws Open Its Gates for a Seven-Day Meeting. TORONTO, Ont., June 19. Racing in the Toronto sector is resumed tomorrow at Duf-f erin Park after a lay-off of two days. Winding up the spring session of the sport in the Toronto sector, the popular half-mile urban oval is in readiness for a banner meeting. Taking the returns from the meetings at the local mile tracks as a criterion it is certain that, given good weather, the seven-day meeting will prove a successful one. Much has been written about the popularity of the west end, of its cosmopolitan crowds, of the intimacy that the patrons and the horsemen enjoy. This spirit of com-raderie goes far towards popularizing the compact track. Recent rains have put the track into a condition that would have required days ot work to accomplish. Fast, yet safe, the opinion of the horsemen regarding the footing is attested by the fact that more than 160 entries were made for the first days program. Racing secretary Charles F. Henry has arranged an attractive opening day card, despite the fact that each of the seven races carries the claiming clause. Each race has attracted a limit field of eight starters. No less than three of the seven events are for horses foaled in Canada, and five of the seven races are distance tests, so popular on half-mile tracks. The final race, apparently named for the "Round and Round Purse," is over a distance of one mile and six and one-half furlongs. This will necessitate the field passing the grandstand four times. Officials for the meeting will be the same as at Long Branch, with the exception that Edwin Allen and Robert Hewitson will reverse their positions. Allen will become a placing judge and Hewitson a steward. The Electro-Photo-Finish camera will be in operation. Post time for the first race will be 2:30 p.. m., daylight saving time, each day, and except on Saturdays the gate will be thrown open to the public after the fifth race.
