DORA MAY TRIUMPHS ,. . IN RIVER DOWNS INAUGURAL GETS CLOSE DECISION Bold Lover and Prince Fellow Noses Apart for Minor Honors. Cincinnati Meeting Opens Under Favorable Conditions Hicena Takes Secondary Attraction. CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct. 1 In one of the most exciting finishes of the year, Dora May, from the Kentucky-owned Rockhome Stable, was winner of the River Downs Inaugural Handicap, the fifth and principal attraction of the opening day program at the revamped course of the River Downs Racing Association this afternoon. Making her own pace and ridden by H. Manifold, the three-year-old daughter of Republic reached the end of six furlongs a nose before H. C. Rumages Bold Lover, which had the same margin over W. D. Covingtons Prince Fellow. A small field of seven started, with Reminiscent saving fourth from the heavily supported Exhibit, Odd Star and Raymond. After the opening three-eighths, where Dora May was enjoying a clear margin, the race was a thriller. Bold Lover, which, with Exhibit, was carrying the top impost of 118 pounds, drove up on the outside of the winner and Glen Fowler sent Prince Fellow through on the inside. Rounding the turn for the run home the trio were closely lapped and inside the final furlong any one of them appeared the winner. However. Dora May proved the gamest and responded to Manifolds strong hand riding to have a good nose advantage at the end. The same margin separated Bold Lover and Reminiscent, the latter being eight lengths in the van of Exhibit, which was a big disappointment. After being right with the leaders during the run to the far turn he dropped back readily. AUSPICIOUS START. No more favorable weather could have prevailed for the sport. The racing strip, which but for a heavy rain late yesterday would have been in its best condition, was classified as slow. The crowd was a very good one and general manager Edward P. Strong and his associates were very much pleased with the inaugural turnout and the mutuel "handle." Despite the performers coming from many different points, the public succeeded in selecting most of the winners. Supporting the feature was the Bugle Call Purse, for two-year-olds, and it resulted in one of the more popular victories when Ridge Brook Stables Hicena was successful. Toneys Jirl was second, and third went to Doctor C. N. Paris Prince, one of the choices, dropped out of contention soon after the start and was a distant trailer during the greater part of the six furlongs. The winner, a daughter of Hi-Jack, sprinted into a commanding lead during the opening quarter, with Toneys Girl and Doctor C. N. showing the way to the others. After increasing his advantage, Hicena was put to unnecessary pressure and, though tiring, she lasted to lead Toneys Girl by a half length at the end. Some four lengths separated Toneys Girl and Doctor CN, Cossack pjrl next half a length back. The others of the field of eight were outrun. Chester O Malleys House Baby scored her second straight victory and fifth of the yeat when she proved much the best of the lightly regarded Tappanaugh, Riff and seven others, including the well-backed Zebulo, that raced six furlongs in the introductory contest. Porter Roberts rushed the Baby Grand Iilly into a clear lead during the first quar-ter and, increasing her advantage thereafter, Cnntinuid on thirty-fourth page. " DORA MAY TRIUMPHS IN RIVER DOWNS INAUGURAL Continued from first page. she reached the finish two and a half lengths before Tappanaugh, which but for giving way momentarily to Riff In the stretch was always best of the others. A big surprise came with the second event, also over six furlongs, when Noma F. carried Ambrose Eastons colors to an easy victory over Mystic Sign, Thunder Lou and eight others. Willie Farrell drove the four-year-old filly into a clear lead in the first sixteenth and she made every post a winning one to lead Mystic Sign by two lengths at the end. The latter and Thunder Lou were always best of the others, while Peter Pumpkin, the choice, finished fourth. CONSISENT WOWO. Wowo, consistent daughter of Golden Guinea which races for Sparks and Hester, provided the first popular score and completed a double for Roberts when she accounted for the third race. However, after establishing a big advantage during the first half mile of the six furlongs jsprint, she tired fast, and Jay Bee Jay, which was impeded at the start, was fast gaining on her at the end. Monon Lad, the second choice which pursued the winner the greater part of the race, lasted to beat Trauwina a nose for minor honors. While Wowo held sway throughout, JayBee Jay was the victim of early interference. . The biggest surprise came with the sixth. when San Ardo furlong, l in md a drove inrout, to the finish others Zem?r far fa? "ack bacK VhZte wnu Temple n Hill winner and wore Sy-Never at the end.
