ITSIE BITSIE HARD RIDDEN! i Leads All the Way in Mile Race at Rockingham to Score by Length. Heavily Backed Hokuao Proves Big Disappointment Public Choices Do Well Triple for Jackson. SALEM, N. H., Oct. 1. A long shot at 30 to 1 interrupted the march of the favorites as Mrs. Ray Pollards Itsie Bitsic was ridden out smartly by jockey Howell to score in the mile event at Rockingham Park this afternoon. The track was deep in holding slop but despite the treacherous conditions, the first four races were won by public choices. A heavily backed favorite went down in this event, however, when Hokuao, a star mud runner, finished fourth. He stumbled slightly at the start and sulked for the entire distance, although Knott plied his whip hard in an effort to rouse him into running. He made up some ground in the stretch but that was largely because the horses behind him quit running and Howell saved ground on the rail. He finished out a sour horse with his head down and his action wobbly. Itsie Bitsie led for the entire distance, breaking in front and responding to Howells hand ride to stave off the challenge of the fast closing Bye Bye Mary, from the Carr Brothers stable by a length. The latter was three lengths in front of Mrs. W. Sorrentinos Diverting at the judges stand. The public choice was another two and a half lengths back. Real Jam, which wore out three assistant starters at the post, was off slowly and Hokuao stumbled at the start. The latter, usually a front runner, refused to run at all when he .could .not get. to the top and Howell took Itsie Bitsie into a long lead at once, with Diverting in nearest pursuit and Bye Bye Mary rated third. They went down the back stretch and around the far turn in that order with the others strung out behind them. DOMINATED RUNNING. Midway of the turn for home, Stevenson moved up with Bye Bye Mary and was second as they straightened out for the run down the final straightaway. The Black Servant mare went after the leader in a determined manner but was unable to get up and it was apparent at the sixteenth marker that Itsie Bitsie was home free. The runner-up was drawing away from the tiring Diverting at the end. The first three horses dominated all of the running. Rain and raw weather cut the crowd to a minimum. The track was in bad condition as the mile of the feature, run in 1:43, will attest. "Sport" Haymakers Curling splashed to victory in the opening dash, at six furlongs, showing the way to Mrs. P. Planles Prosecutor by three lengths. P. S. P. Randolphs Bramble Run was third, half a length behind the runner-up and a length and one-half in front of Wrought Iron. Charley Stevenson rode the winner. The Brooms mare, relishing the going, went into the lead immediately and was never headed or even seriously menaced. Prosecutor was second the entire distance and staved off the belated bid of Bramble Run for second place. Spittenimage was with the leaders until they hit the stretch. Ho. was pinched back in attempting to come between horses, but appeared tiring and beaten at the time. RUNAWAY VICTORY. Miss L. C. Whites St Nick scored a runaway victory in the second race, leading every step of the journey to finish three lengths in front of Paul Rattis A.- OConnell. W.- G.- Clysdales Threatening finished third, a neck in front of Airy Sonnet There was never anything in the race but the winner. He leaped away from the starting gate and was in full stride immediately, opening -up a four lengths lead on his opponents before they had traveled a sixteenth. From that point home Jackson had little to do but sit still and let him run. He had them laboring behind him before a half mile was covered. A. OConnell followed the leader closest all the way, with Airy Sonnet third. Fred Coppas Capt. Yarbrough, a 4 to 5 choice, won the third race, over five and a half furlongs but ho did not win like a 4 to 5 favorite should. After a close contest with E. Olyotts Kenner all the way, he got the decision by a head. Kenner would have won but for going a bit wide as they turned for home. He came again in the final drive and had the Captain out to the last ounce to beat him. The battle between the leading pair carried them out two and a half lengths in front of R. Robertsons Scout Plane, which was third past the judges. It was a two-rhorse race all the way. BACON BY LENGTH. "Come Along" Kamar drove through next to the rail to win the fourth astride Mrs. A. R. Smiths Bacon. At the end Kamars mud splattered mount was a length clear of E. A. McManns Character, with Miss Estelle Burchs Advancing third in the field of eight Air Line finished fourth. Laddie Stone went out to set the early pace, with Bacon in nearest pursuit. Bacon bid for the lead on the turn, but could not get through and Kamar took him back to third place. He stuck to the rail and, as Laddie Stone quit just past the eighth post, drove through and then withstood the challenge of Character in the final sixteenth. Another long shot clicked in the sixth at three-quarters when L. J. Stachles Brilliant Miss, at 35 to 1 and your money back, got home in front by a head. The winner was ridden by Stonewall Jackson and the score marked a triple for that rider. Brilliant Miss drove up on the outside to the lead at the sixteenth ground, and managed to stave off the fast stretch charge of Stephen Rices Nevcrfade. The latter was half a length in front of Grandmas Boy and a neck in ad vancc of Hoosic Maid, which made the pace to the stretch. Jester B., heavily backed, refused to break and was not taken after the field. After, the running of the race,-the stewards ruled that Jester-B., would not be permitted to start during the rest of the meeting.
