Futurity Favorite Impresses in Trial Over Sloppy Track v Pompoons Odds Cut After His Brilliant Workout Louchheim Colt Now 6 to 5 in Wagering Charing Cross Works Three-Quarters. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct 1. Within a short time after Pompoon had worked seven furlongs in 1:25, handily, over a sloppy track at Belmont Park this morning the odds on J. H. Louchheims popular candidate for tomorrows renewal of the worlds richest two-year-old event were cut from 8 to 5 to 6 to 5 by Frank Shannon, well known clubhouse commissioner. Shannon stated, however, that he had withdrawn prices on the other candidates and the favorite was the only horse on which he would accept wagers. The trial of the rangy son of Pompey and Oonagh was very impressive, as he galloped the distance at a steady pace, going the first quarter in :24, half in :48U, five furlongs in 1:00 and and three-quarters in 1:12. He went through his paces over the main course, with Harry Richards, who will ride him tomorrow, in the saddle. Pompoon went the first and last quarters of the workout in exactly the same time. FIELD REPRESENTATIVE. Charing Cross, which will be the principal dependance of Marshall Field in the Futurity and a winner earlier in the week, was also sent through his final paces this morning by trainer George Odom, going six furlongs in 1:14, with something in reserve. He was timed the first half mile in :48 and the five furlongs in 1:01. George Seabo arrived from New England and may be entrusted with Sir Damion, if that colt acts a running mate to Charing Cross. Several other likely starters in the Futurity were given much easier trials, Zostcra, property of William Ziegler, Jr., going three furlongs in :36 and Sun Capture galloping a half mile in :48H. The status of Hal Price Headleys Apogee remains in doubt, as trainer D. A. Headiey was unable to state today whether the good filly would be a Futurity starter. Apogee, was unplaced in the Matron Stakes last Saturday and went six furlongs over the training track in 1:17, easily, yesterday morn- Continued on thirty-fourth vage. If she starts in the Futurity the daughter of Pharamond II. would be called upon to carry top weight on the scale of 127 pounds. Pompoon will shoulder a like impost, but he gets no allowance. The track was sloppy today because of the heavy rain during the previous night and with no further downfall it should be in good condition tomorrow and at its best for Saturdays program, which, in addition to the Futurity, will be featured by The Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Grand National Steeplechase. SMALL FIELD. No more than half a dozen are expected to accept in The Jockey Club Gold Cup, at two miles, even though Granville will be an absentee. No word was received from Maryland as to the intention of A. G. Vanderbilt in regard to Discovery, which gave a disap-l pointing performance Wednesday in the ; Havre de Grace Handicap. A few hours before that race Vanderbilt stated that he expected to run Discovery in the Cup. Mrs. J. Hertz Count Arthur, which was nosed out by Action in the Manhattan Handicap, Wednesday, is a certain starter, and Firethorn and Giant Killer, comprising the Walter M. Jeffords entry, are expected to accept, even though they finished fourth and fifth in the Manhattan. Firethorn may have needed that race, as it was his first start since mid-July. Greentree Stables Memory Book has been pointed for the Cup, having sidestepped the Manhattan, and he was given a stiff workout that morning. C. V. Whitneys Tatterdemalion, recent winner of the Potomac Handicap, and the Middleburg Stables Es-posa, victorious in the Rochambeau Handicap at Narragansett Park last Saturday, are other possibilities. Conditions for the. Cup call for older horses to carry 124 pounds and three-year-olds 117 pounds. Esposa would get a sex allowance of three pounds to carry 121 pounds. CRUSHER OF 172 POUNDS. Even though he has been assigned 172 pounds, Joseph E. Wideners Bushranger is due to start in the Grand National Steeplechase, and if successful he would be the first to carry more than 170 pounds to victory in the three-mile race. Good and Plenty carried the latter impost to an impressive triumph in the race just twenty years ago. Bushrangers opponents may include Mrs. Ethel Jacobs Amagansett, a clean-cut winner today. He is the second high weight with 157 pounds. Other probable starters are Rioter, Golden Meadow, St Francis, Spinach, Birmingham, Jungle King and Route One.
