LADYMUCH IN SUPERB EFFORT Earns ,340 by Victory in Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine. Winner Forced to Give Utmost to Withstand Determined Challenge of E. F. Seagrams Gay Sympathy. TORONTO, Ont, Oct 1. Medway Stables Ladymuch, three-year-old daughter of Not Much Lady Floyd, drove to victory in the one mile and one-sixteenth of the Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine Park today. At the end Ladymuch was three-quarters of a length before E. F. Seagrams Gay Sympathy, while a length and one-quarter back of the pair the D. and M. Stables Hittie was third in the field of nine. This feature, of which todays was the forty-third running, is confined to three- and four-year-old fillies foaled in the Dominion. By her victory, Ladymuch, which was ridden by jockey P. Remillard, earned ,340. Gay Sympathy had been claimed Wednesday because of her engagement in the Maple Leaf. The start was a good one and Blue Wren and Ladymuch raced as a team in the lead into the back stretch. This was under sufferance from the Medway Stable representative, however, for after the half-mile post was reached Blue Wren quit Ladymuch drew clear, but on the turn a new threat loomed in Silent Sea, which drove up on the outside to take second place. Ladymuch shook her off without, great difficulty and entering the stretch Remillard took his charge wide in search of better footing. Here Hittie, which had always been in a contending position, made her challenge, and again Ladymuch proved superior. Meanwhile Gay Sympathy had gradually bettered her position, and when the leaders swung wide in the stretch she drove through the opening, supplanting Hittie in second place and forcing Ladymuch to the limit to turn back her challenge. TRACK TO HIS LIKING. Zangwill found the track and the opposition in the first race to his liking and romped home four easy lengths before Den-claire at the end of the. mile and seventy yards test. Third went, to the fast-closing Camp Craig. Zangwills victory was a front-running one. He disposed of Maetico when entering the back stretch and drew into a safe lead before being placed under a snug hold. He was never seriously threatened for the balance of the race, drawing out with ease through the stretch. Denclaire raced closest to Zangwill most of the way and made a futile bid to reduce the advantage of the leader on the turn for home. While Camp Craig, which had been unable to match the early speed of the leaders, closed with a rush to take the show award from Gingery. Our Trouble drove to a half length victory over a mile and seventy yards in the second race, displacing the choice, Mind-reader, in the final strides. The race developed into a duel between the first two with Willow Wand third five lengths back. Willow Wand set the early pace and raced in front of Mindreader to the stretch, where the favorite succeeded in overcoming her advantage to gain the van position. Meanwhile, Our Trouble, which had been very slow to find his speed, came fast on the outside to wear Mindreader down in the final yards. Willow Wand had enough left to hold Aflurry safe for. third. Stegal, making his second start of the year, proved best of the field of five that met in the six furlongs .fifth race. Coming from behind the . pace, set by Goggles, the Seagram representativetoolc command entering the stretch -and. was kept under pressure to the end to. stall off the challenge of -Shepherd Boy. Goggles was able to save third from Fascinator, while the only other starter, Happy Jester, was a trailer throughout Jockey J. Boucher plans to depart for Laurel, Md.t Thursday evening.
