EPSOM DOWNS TURF NOTES I a Jockey Melvin Calvert accepted his initial mount of the current Epsom Downs meeting when he rode Brilliant Light in the Texas State Hotel Claiming Purse, feature of Thursdays card. He also was astride Pompous Genie in the eighth. Jockey Leo Jones will make an effort to reduce to riding weight when the weather becomes warm enough for him to go on the road. He contemplates accepting mounts during the meeting here. The veteran turfman. Clint Dewitt, who trained for the late Domick OMalley in the days of the old city park race track in New Orleans, arrived from New Orleans and will remain throughout the meeting. Jockey Herbert "Tex" Callahan, who hails from Valley Wells, Texas, celebrated his twenty-third birthday Thursday. He is riding free lance at Epsom Downs. J. McDowell brought in J. C. Mclntyres The Point from Detroit in a mixed carload of thoroughbreds. Wax and Score are the two runners that J. Phelps brought to Epsom Downs from Detroit after the close of the session in the Wolverine State last Monday. Jack London, who served as custodian of the press quarters at Detroit, motored down from the Michigan city and plans to remain in the Lone Star State through the fall and spring racing seasons. S. N. "Sunny Sam" Holman arrived from Chicago by motor Thursday morning and added the four horses of Mrs. L. J. Remm to his registration which got in from Lincoln Fields late Wednesday evening. The horses are Flight of Gold, Steponit, Blue Train and Red Rod. They will be conditioned by Holman. Jockey Ross DePrema, veteran reinsman, arrived from Chicago accompanied by Mrs. DePrema and plans to ride free lance during the Texas fall racing season. J. M. Jones, who is handling two horses which race in the interest of Mrs. J. M. Jones, is an arrival from the Detroit Fair Grounds, with No Worry and Empress Yvonne.
