Beard, manager of the vast Whitney racing and thoroughbred interests, came from the Whitney headquarters at Lexington and was in the paddock as Mose Goldblatt saddled John Hay Whitneys Flying Scot in the Latonia Derby. Governor A. B. Chandler and Mrs. Chandler had among their guests in the governors box "Bo McMillan, former gridiron star at Centre College. . Garnett V. Keller and Buck Weaver were other Louisville scribes on hand for the big event and, of course, did the usual good job of reporting for the Louisville Times. Track superintendent Charles Nolte kept a crew of workmen busy throughout Friday uigiit. m ins eiiort 10 wnip ine course into a fast condition for the running of the Derby. As soon as training activities ceased Saturday morning, he resumed work and succeeded in bringing about the further improvement. Jockeys Alfred Robertson and Basil James arrived Saturday morning from Chicago, and jockey Gilbert came in from New York to fill engagements in the Derby. They will return to their respective points from whence they came to resume riding there Mondayl .Emerson F. Woodward, owner of the Val-dina Farms, a Texas establishment, arrived from Chicago Saturday and inspected his. Derby hopeful, Eagle Pass. Woodward was a box holder with a party of friends in the clubhouse. Three of the sixty-two nominees for- the Clipsetta Stakes, next important fixture on Latonias program, received a prep for next Saturdays engagement. G. R. "Buddy" Wingfield, who serves as starter at several of the major tracks and a native of Covington, was among those attending for the running of the Latonia Derby. Wingfield will do the starting at Thistle Down, which opens July 12. Jake Zombro, prominent figure at Dade Park during the racing season there, came down from Henderson, Ky., for the Derby. He plans to remain for several weeks of sport. A notice was posted on the bulletin board in the racing secretarys office that entries for Tuesdays racing would close at the regular time Monday. This practice will be continued for the remainder of the meeting. Jockey George South announced his intention of donning the silks this week for the first time since he suffered an injury at Churchill Downs during the spring meeting. Former jockey Kenneth Noe will make his engagements. Though Silversmith has been away from the races for some time, the speedy performer is being taken along slowly by Mose Goldblatt. It is quite probable the horse will return to racing during the current meeting. The subscription taken up by Johnny Daniels for Al Luzader, who is dangerously ill at his home in Covington, has been turned over to Mrs. Luzader, who wishes to express her profound thanks to all for their generous assistance. After looking over the list of jockeys at Latonia, trainer Robert McGarvey of Milky Way Farm, decided on Willie Garner to handle Military in the Derby. - Col. Matt J. Winn, president of the American Turf Association, leaves next Friday for Chicago, to attend the American Derby at Washington Park and the Braddock-Louis championship boxing match, to be held in Chicago a week from Tuesday. Following the latter event, Colonel Winn returns here "o remain until after the close of the meeting, July 10. In a statement Saturday afternoon, Colonel Winn says that title to the Fair-mount Park race track, near Collinsville, 111., had been turned over to interests represented by Robert E. Costello, attorney of East St. Louis, HI., upon payment of approximately 5,000 more than a month ago. Brown Combs Patrona, which has not started here as yet, went a handy half mile from the barrier in :24, :36 and :49. J. R. Nevilles Romaine was sent four furlongs, going the first quarter in :26 and the half in :53. J. W. Parrishs Genevra M., a recent impressive winner, engaged in a more trying test of five furlongs, covering a half mile in :52 and the five furlongs in 1:06.,
