GOLDLURE FAILS AT TORONTO Kings Plate Winner Beaten by Cease Fire in Long Branch Handicap Aldwych Second. TORONTO, Ont., June 12. Cease Fire, much improved son of Worthmore and Flanders Fields, which races for H. R. Bain and which took down top honors in the recent renewal of the Prince of Wales Plate, at Thorncliffe Park, came right back with another good effort to be winner of the inaugural running of the ,000 Long Branch Handicap today. At the end of the trying nine furlongs journey, which brought out seven of the best three-year-old homebreds in active training, the Bain colorbearer was three-quarters of a length in advance of the fast-closing Aldwych, which in turn was a scant nose off Slycat, another strong finisher. The winner negotiated the distance in. the good time of 1:53. Goldlure, which attracted the bulk of public support, finished a badly beaten fifth. His race was pounds below the effort he showed when winning the Kings Plate. Favored by ideal weather conditions, the Lake Shore plant catered to a- capacity gathering and, a series of close finishes kept the large attendance at a high pitch throughout the day. HOW RACE WAS RUN. When starter Clark sent the field on its way in the feature, Cease Fire was sent to the front after the first few yards had been traversed. He was followed by the Park-wood Stables Silver Jubilee? and Slycat. Going down the back stretch the Bain gelding held a slight advantage over Silver Jubilee and Goldlure. At the half-mile post the field was pretty well bunched, but Cease Fire was going along smoothly in his van position. Turning for home Silver Jubilee moved up with a rush on the inside, headed Cease Fire near the quarter post, but when the field had straightened out for the stretch run Cease Fire responded to his riders urging and drew away into a length lead. In the meantime Aldwych, which had been taken back when, outrun on the back stretch, came with a fine burst of speed next to the inner rail and coming between the "leaders got along in time to earn the place award. Slycat, which also found trouble in keeping up with the early pace, came in determined fashion to outfinish the tiring Silver Jubilee for show honors. The last mentioned was found wanting in the final drive.
