Mars Milky Way Farm will hold one of the strongest hands, for she has five named for the race, including Reaping Reward, Military, Murph, Mars Shield, winner of the Texas Derby, and Case Ace, winner of the Illinois Derby. Which pair will start is problematic, but Reaping Reward is likely to be accompanied by either Case Ace or Mars Shield. Should the filly go the race will be marked by the first duel between the prize fillies of the East and West, for Max Hirsch is expected to ship the King Ranchs Dawn Play here for the Derby. Revived in 1926, the Derby has annually gone to top-notch performers, with Toro, Mate, Gusto, Mr. Khayyam and Cavalcade among the winners. BLACK HELENS VICTORY. The last running two years ago found another filly home first, E. R. Bradleys Black Helen. So there is precedent for the efforts of Dawn Play and Mars Shield for an American Derby win. Flying Scot, winner of the Withers, will be here for the race; Reaping Reward, third in the Kentucky Derby, is sure to start; Heelfly, consistent Texas-owned thoroughbred; Over the Top, Yellow Tulip, No Sir, Dellor, Burning Star, Sunset Trail H. and the dark horse, Eagle Pass, are all regarded as certain to be in the gate when starter Dick- Continued on thirty-fourth page. Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter and Mrs. Julia Lofts Mo-sawtre are other probable American Derby starters, as is Mrs. Emil Denemarks Orientalist, should he come to the racing wars this week in the form that made him one of the leaders of the juvenile division a year ago. Orientalist is. to make his 1937 debut Mon-: day afternoon in the fourth race, being called upon to meet a large field at six furlongs.
