RUDIE AND PERPETUATE WIN Account for Shevlin and Tremont Stakes at Aqueduct Course. goeneshifter Second In Three-Year-Old Fixture at New York With Brooklyn Among Unplaced. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 12 The two finest performances of a brilliant afternoons racing at Aqueduct Saturday were those which "earned victories in the Shevlin and Tremont Stakes for William H. Gallaghers Rudie and Robert L. Gerrys Perpetuate. A crowd of 12,000 persons turned out as clear and warm weather prevailed while the track was fast. Leading ,most of the way over the mile course under a well judged ride from the capable Eddie Arcaro, Rudie captured the Shevlin by three-quarters of a length over Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter, which was coupled with Fencing as the favorite, while Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins improved Strabo was only another head away in third place and well before Grand Play and the four other contestants. The chestnut son of Reigh Count and Daunt, which was shipped from Suffolk Downs especially for his Shevlin engagement, carried 114 pounds and ran the mile in 1:38. His Shevlin victory was worth ,350. RACES MELODIST INTO DEFEAT. Hustled to the front soon after the start, Rudie raced Melodist into defeat in the opening five furlongs, coming into the stretch with such a clear lead that Arcaro snugged him along expertly. Inside the final furlong as Sceneshifter and Strabo challenged on the outside, Arcaro permitted the Gallagher colt to drift out to the center of the track, which gave the riders of the contenders a perplexing problem. Toward the end Arcaro -resorted to strong hand riding and this had the effect of holding Rudie in a comfortable lead to the end. Sceneshifter and Strabo both came on steadily on the outside of the Reigh Count colt, but their challenges came too late although they were lapped on the winner at the wire. Grand Play was close up until faltering in the final furlong. Brooklyn raced impressively until called upon for his finishing rush. Moonton likewise had early speed, while Fencing never was able to threaten. BRDLLIANT PERFORMANCE. Perpetuate added the Tremont Stakes to his triumphs at Belmont Park with a brilliant performance as the bay son of Infinite and Citrus had to withstand a long hard drive to run down Alfred Vanderbilts Indian Lodge, which he defeated by a head. They finished the five furlongs, the time for which was :59, seven lengths ahead of Robert A. Smiths Gayset, as Armor Bearer .was a close fourth among the six good youngsters composing the field. The Gerry colt was called upon to carry top weight of 119 pounds, but he was installed an odds-on favorite nevertheless. The two colts staged a bitter duel, with both jockeys using the whip freV.y, but Perpetuate was not to be denied as he finished out in the center of the track and the photograph showed him to be the winner. The victory was worth ,750 and brought the Gerry colts earnings from two victories and a second in three starts to 1,595.
